NUS is No Longer Asia’s Top University, Losing to a University from China

National University of Singapore (NUS) is widely known around Asia, and arguably the rest of the world for its amazing reputation as the top university in Asia for the past decade.

However, this is no longer the case as it recently lost its top spot as Asia’s best-ranking university to Peking University in Mainland China.

It was in the top spot for four years.

Rankings Determined by Various Factors

QS determines a university’s ranking through an analysis of multiple factors. They include:

  • Academic reputation
  • Employer reputation
  • Citations per paper
  • Papers per faculty
  • Staff with a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
  • Faculty-to-student ratio
  • International research network
  • Proportion of international faculty and students
  • Proportion of inbound and outbound exchange students

Although these factors may not scream the word “important”, they are good indicators of how well a university performs from year to year.

NUS Will Continue to Improve

An NUS spokesperson said that as one of Asia’s top universities, the school will continue to build on its strong track record in innovation and research.

The spokesperson further added that the school being recognised as one of the top universities in Asia affirms the hard work that their faculty, researchers, staff, students and alumni have put in and that the fluctuation in the ranking was bound to happen especially with the increasing competition around the world.

NTU also Drops in Ranking

Another prestigious local university, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) also dropped in rankings.

The local university, more commonly called “Pulau NTU” due to it being situated at a remote location, is now in fifth place, dropping two places down from third.

NTU was overtaken by Tsinghua University and The University of Hong Kong.

Both Universities Are in Top 20 Internationally

Although both universities have dropped in the Asian rankings, Singaporeans can still stand proud as both universities made it to the top 20 for the International rankings.

NUS took 11th place, while NTU took 19th place when compared to other renowned universities in the world such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the University of Cambridge and Harvard University.
