For reasons unknown, many students and lecturers from the National University of Singapore (NUS) have been involved in cases of sexual misconduct.
In fact, it’s happened so often that you probably weren’t surprised when you read the headline.
While NUS has stepped up its measure to tackle such cases, students are still reporting inappropriate behaviour.
Last year, two staff members were dismissed for sexual misconduct.
We’ve not heard much of such cases since then, but it turns out that they were still happening both on and off-campus.
2 NUS Students Expelled for Sexual Misconduct Between Jan & June
Two students from NUS were expelled in the first half of 2021 for sexual misconduct, an NUS report said.
The report, released yesterday (5 Aug), details sexual misconduct complaints in NUS between January and June this year.
One of the two students expelled allegedly raped another student in a hostel room, and was reported to the school on 10 Feb. A no-contact order was issued, and the student’s candidature was terminated.
The other student allegedly touched another student inappropriately in a hostel room, and filmed a third student in the nude without consent while they were in a hostel. A no-contact order was also issued against the student, and his candidature was terminated as well.
Police reports have been lodged in both cases. Both students are appealing their expulsion.
Eight Other Cases of Sexual Misconduct
In addition, there were eight other complaints of sexual misconduct lodged against students. However, none of the alleged offenders was expelled.
The cases include:
- Indecent exposure – charged was dismissed
- Inappropriate verbal or physical contact of a sexual nature – student was suspended for 6 semesters and ordered to undergo counselling
- Sexual assault – charge was dismissed
- Inappropriate verbal or physical contact of a sexual nature – student was issued a letter of reprimand and has to undergo counselling. A no-contact order was also issued.
- Indecent exposure – student was suspended for 4 semesters and has to undergo counselling
- Sexual assault – no further action taken due to lack of evidence
- Voyeurism – case is pending
- Voyeurism – case is pending
In the last two cases, the complainants were allegedly filmed during sexual acts or while showering without their consent.
Both complainants are members of the public.
Including the two students who were expelled, seven of the ten sexual misconduct cases involving students occurred on campus.
Another Staff Member Dismissed
One staff member was also dismissed sometime between January and June this year, the report said.
According to the report, two students made complaints that they were sexually harassed by a researcher in school. The researcher had allegedly made inappropriate sexual remarks at work and sent inappropriate videos to the students.
One of the students reported that the researcher had also made inappropriate physical contact.
The accused admitted to touching the student’s knees and making inappropriate remarks.
The researcher’s actions were reported on 25 March, and they were dismissed for breaching the staff code of conduct after investigations concluded on 7 April.
A police report has also been lodged against the staff member.
Updates on Older Cases
Two students were also expelled for offences committed before 1 Jan this year, both for voyeurism.
As for an alleged sex-for-favours case involving staff members, NUS said it’s taking no further action against it.
Last December, a complainant wrote to NUS and alleged that two NUS staff members had sexual relations with a former student for better grades.
However, NUS said that the allegations were not substantiated.
NUS said that more students are coming forward to lodge complaints against perpetrators, and that the number of cases involving staff members has decreased.
Those who wish to report instances of sexual misconduct can call NUS Care Unit (for both staff and students) at 6601-4000 and NUSHeart (for staff) at 800-130-1950.
