West siders who frequented JCube’s ice rink were left disappointed when the facility closed in August 2023 to make way for a residential development in Jurong East.
The rink was a beloved hangout spot for many Gen Zs, especially after school, making it an iconic part of their childhood.
However, they may not have to wait much longer for a replacement.
A new Olympic-sized ice rink is in the works, with plans to build it at the former Pandan Gardens Swimming Complex.
Singapore to Get a New Olympic-Size Ice Rink by End-2026
Ever since JCube’s closure, Singapore has been without an Olympic-sized ice rink, leaving athletes without a proper space to train.
The only remaining rink, located at Kallang Leisure Park, is smaller than international competition standards, forcing athletes to train overseas while waiting for a new ice rink to be built in Singapore.
While no exact location has been officially confirmed, The Straits Times reported that the former Pandan Gardens Swimming Complex has been identified as a potential site.
The facility will include two rinks — one Olympic-sized and a smaller rink measuring one-third of the standard size.
Construction to Begin in March 2025, Completion by End-2026
According to minutes from the Singapore Ice Hockey Association’s (SIHA) annual general meeting on 31 August 2024, the project has been confirmed with a 10-year lease and an option for a 10-year extension.
Construction is scheduled to begin in March 2025, with completion expected by the end of 2026. Earlier in March 2024, the Singapore Ice Skating Association (SISA) announced that a tenure of more than 10 years had been secured for the development.
The potential rink site, located next to Ayer Rajah Community Club, will be approximately 200m from a future Jurong Region Line MRT station, slated to open in 2028.
The History of Pandan Gardens Swimming Complex
The former Pandan Gardens Swimming Complex was originally opened in October 1978 at 200 Pandan Gardens.
However, due to low usage, it closed in 2003 and was returned to the state by the then Singapore Sports Council (now known as SportSG).
In July 2012, the Singapore Land Authority awarded the site to LHN Properties Investments for use as a sports facility and fitness centre. The tenancy was initially set for three years, with the possibility of two further extensions of three years each.
According to parent company LHN Group’s annual reports, the tenancy was renewed in August 2021, August 2022, August 2023, and March 2024.
With construction of the new rink set to begin soon, west siders and athletes alike can look forward to once again having a world-class ice sports facility in Singapore.
