98 Omicron Cases Reported in a Day When There Were a Total of 248 New COVID-19 Cases

Yesterday (25 December), MOH said that they’ve detected a new Omicron cluster in a bar, and it comprises 10 people.

All it took was one person to be in a bar and it spread rapidly in the community.

If that isn’t enough to convince you that Omicron is spreading as fast as chickenpox in a household, wait till you read this.

98 Omicron Cases Reported in a Day When There Were a Total of 248 New COVID-19 Cases

Yesterday, 248 COVID-19 cases were reported.

Of course, there might be many more unreported cases but that’s for another discussion.

Here’s the thing: 98 Omicron cases were reported, too.

Given that MOH mentioned that they’re now using a new testing practice to detect Omicron, and if these 98 cases were part of the 248 cases (details of whether they were old cases or not weren’t revealed), this means that the percentage of reported cases in a day that carry the Omicron variant is at a whopping 39% now.

As of yesterday, the total number of Omicron cases has ballooned to 448.

For comparison’s sake, on Monday, the number of Omicron cases is at 71.

Do the maths and you can draw your own conclusion.

Of the 98 Omicron cases reported yesterday, 25 were local and 73 were imported.

10-People Cluster in The Vinyl Bar

In a press statement yesterday, MOH said that they have detected a cluster of 10 COVID-19 Omicron cases linked to The Vinyl Bar (226 River Valley Road). All 10 cases are fully vaccinated and have mild or no symptoms. MOH is ringfencing the cases through contact tracing.

The source of the cluster is a traveller who arrived in Singapore on 14 December 2021 from the US via a Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) flight. His on-arrival test was negative for COVID-19, and he tested positive for COVID-19 infection on 18 December.

On 15 December, he met a colleague who then subsequently visited The Vinyl Bar on 17 December.

Epidemiological investigations found that this colleague likely transmitted the virus to a staff of the bar and three patrons who were at the bar that evening. One of the patrons then went on to infect four household members.

Therefore, staff and visitors of The Vinyl Bar who are identified to be close contacts of the cases will be placed on quarantine. As a precautionary measure, other staff and visitors to the bar at the same time as colleague on 17 December will be contacted by MOH for a one-time targeted polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test.

MOH also advised all  visitors to The Vinyl Bar to monitor their health closely, and minimise social interactions as far as possible, for 14 days from their date of visit. They are encouraged to see a doctor immediately if they feel unwell.
