Singapore Pools is probably preparing the odds for these:
- Omicron will take over as the main strain in Singapore before 31 Dec 2021
- Omicron will take over as the main strain in Singapore before 31 Jan 2022
On Christmas Eve, MOH reported a total of 82 new Omicron variant COVID-19 cases. For comparison’s sake, there were 265 new cases reported yesterday.
Let’s not even discuss the unreported cases.
However, it should be noted that the new 82 cases aren’t all from the cases reported yesterday; instead, it’s a “one-time substantial increase” from previous pending cases as MOH has now changed their testing practice, which will start from 24 December 2021.
According to MOH, “Covid-19 cases tested positive for the S-gene target failure (SGTF) will be categorised as Omicron cases, without additional whole genome sequencing (WGS).
“Based on our local experience, if a person tests positive for SGTF, it is very likely that it is an Omicron variant.”
This is the practice in other countries, too.

I know you don’t understand what they said, so you just need to know this: testing for Omicron gets easier, which means we might be seeing more cases.
Of the 82 new Omicron cases reported yesterday, 65 were imported and 17 were local.
No further details about the local cases were revealed.
Despite the less-than-ideal news on a day when people were celebrating, there is a good news: for the first time since 19 Sept, there wasn’t any death reported yesterday.
However, the utilisation rate of the intensive care unit now stands at 51.7%, up from 50% the day before.
The total case tally in Singapore is now at 277,307 cases.
