Caterer in Admiralty, On & On Diners, Suspended After 73 People Fell Sick With Food Poisoning

“Be very careful what you put in your stomach”.

This was what my grandfather told me after he saw me eat an entire jar of Nutella with a spoon, but I think it applies to food safety as well.

Food poisoning is no joke; it will leave you exploding from all ends at the very least, and can land you in the hospital if severe enough.

And as much we hate to think about it, there’s always a danger of eating improperly handled food whenever we dine outside.

Caterer in Admiralty, On & On Diners, Suspended After 73 People Fell Sick With Food Poisoning

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) and Ministry of Health (MOH) are investigating a mass food poisoning incident involving a caterer in Admiralty.

Between 16 and 18 Nov this year, 73 patrons of On & On Diners reported gastroenteritis symptoms after eating food at the caterer, located at 8A Admiralty Street.

SFA said the caterer’s food business operations have been suspended until further notice.  Fortunately, none of the 73 patrons has been hospitalised.

SFA said it ordered the caterer to clean and sanitise the premises, including equipment and utensils, and dispose all ready-to-eat food and perishable food items.

“Food safety is a joint responsibility,” it said.

“SFA would like to remind food operators to observe good food and personal hygiene practices at all times. SFA will not hesitate to take firm action against anyone found to be in violation of the Environmental Public Health Act.”

The agency also advised diners who come across eateries with poor hygiene practices to avoid eating there and instead report them to the SFA here.

151 Students & Staff Contracted Food Poisoning After Eating from a School Canteen

Earlier this year, The International French School closed its cafeteria for a week after over 150 students and staff who dined there contracted food poisoning.

151 people had reported symptoms of gastroenteritis after eating at the school’s canteen, but none of them was hospitalised.

The school, situated along Ang Mo Kio Ave 3, has students at kindergarten level all the way to high school. The issue came to light when several parents reported that their children had symptoms of gastroenteritis after eating at the school’s canteen.

The school said it would implement additional precautionary measures to ensure the safety of its students.

Food in the school’s canteen was apparently catered by Chartwells – a company that was involved in another mass food poisoning incident at the residential colleges of NUS in 2019.
