We’ve all attempted a crash diet here and there in hopes of getting that summer body we want to wear clothes we like.
But losing weight for the sake of health might work as a better motivator instead as seen in veteran Mediacorp actress, Pan Lingling.

Weight Gain During Pandemic
The 51-year-old actress is also a breast cancer survivor and made the decision to do something about her health after she realised she put on weight during the pandemic.
In an interview with Zaobao, the actress said that she was worried the weight gain would impact her health in the long run which led to her making the decision to lose it.
“If I don’t pay attention to my health early, it may be a burden for my children in the future,” said Pan.
Her weight loss was not a one man’s effort as Pan approached fellow friend and actress Xiang Yun for tips on how to lose weight.
(For those unaware, Mediacorp actress Xiang Yun is also a certified nutritionist.)
Last year, Xiang also lost 10kg successfully herself.
Lifestyle Changes For Weight Loss
Pan started by avoiding sugar as much as possible in her daily food intake.
“I used to drink coffee with sugar and milk, and I never liked Kopi-O (black coffee). Now I’ve slowly come to accept it and even started the habit of drinking coffee and other hot drinks without adding sugar.”

Aside from cutting her sugar intake, Pan also changed her daily sleep cycle.

The actress now sleeps at 10:30pm every night and wakes up early in the morning.
(As a night owl, I can’t relate to this.)
“Compared to before, I feel much more energetic, my annual medical report also look good and there are no problems with the three ‘highs’ (cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar).”
Increased Focus on Health Due to Pandemic
The actress is not the only one who made health a priority when the world dealt with a series of lockdowns to stem the pandemic.

With COVID-19, discussions on the need to improve our physical and mental health for the long run began to get traction.
In 2020, the Agency for Science, Technology, and Research (A*STAR) noted that the pandemic was harmful to one’s “emotional, mental, and interpersonal well-being”.
Temporary gym closures previously due to the pandemic have also changed the exercise habits of Singaporeans as many started to pick up outdoor sports due to the safe-distancing rules imposed for indoor sport facilities.
One thing’s for sure is that if you want to lose weight, you can do it.
