Pandan Leaves Has Become an Atas Thing in the UK & We S’poreans Still Put Them in our Cars

Avocados were the “it” food last year, from slathering it on toasts to blending them in shakes, you would see this fruit everywhere.

Prices for avocados skyrocketed and there are cafes and restaurants specializing solely on this wonder fruit.

I can see why.

It is loaded with monosaturated fats (the good fat), potassium and other essential vitamins—but this fruit might be losing its limelight soon.

So what is the next big thing?

Pandan leaves!

We might be familiar with pandan leaves—pandan chicken, anyone?

But the UK will soon go “gaga” over it.

If they haven’t already, that is.

Domestic goddess and celebrity chef, Nigella Lawson who is a huge fan of avocados might be on to greener and more fragrant pastures.

If you have no idea who Nigella Lawson is, you’re missing out on life. She is known for her salacious commentary while cooking—the queen of double entendres.

If you look up food porn in the dictionary, her name will probably be beside it.

She mentioned that pandan leaves is equivalent to vanilla in Southeast Asia and is often seen in cakes and desserts. ‘I think it’s going to be the matcha”, she said in an interview, The Times reported.

She was responsible for the rise of avocados by 30% after she published her no-brainer avocado on toast recipe.

I guess the culinary prophet has spoken!

Just be warned, you might see a deluge of pandan-themed food posts on social media in months to come.

While it might be big in the UK, we are no stranger to this “Southeast Asia vanilla”.

Did you know that it’s not only used for consumption?

You might have come across it in cab rides.

Yes, in cabs, heck, even your dad might have some in his car.

Taxi drivers use it as car fresheners; the long green leaves give off a sweet yet subtle aroma to the car.

It is definitely a cheaper alternative.

This versatile ingredient also wards off cockroaches!

Maybe someone can tweet to Nigella to keep the leftover leaves in the kitchen.

While this can be seen as another food gentrification by the western world—remember sushi burrito—let’s just hope the prices of pandan leaves don’t go up.

If not, we will be carrying torches and pitchforks outside Nigella’s home.
