Remember that time when you were young and had a horrible cough that wouldn’t go away?
No?
Well, maybe it’s just me…
But anyway, I’m pretty sure most of you have at least tried Pei Pa Koa at least once in your life, right? In case you have no idea what Pei Pa Koa is, I’m talking about “枇杷膏”, or like how some of you who like to show off your Chinese skills would say, “京都念慈菴川貝枇杷膏”.
Yeah, that name is indeed a mouthful—just like the Pei Pa Koa.
It’s a good kind of mouthful though. Unlike most cough syrup and traditional medicine, Pei Pa Koa is sweet and minty, exactly what your throat needs when you’re having a sore throat!
And recently, our friends from the United States are just discovering this holy nectar. And well, you know how these trends tend to go.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Pei Pa Koa can be purchased from Chinese pharmacies for approximately $7 as well as online through third parties for up to $70.
Wait, $70?!
You mean to tell me that bottle of Pei Pa Koa sitting on my shelves is worth $70 USD? Whoa, I could make some serious money selling Pei Pa Koa online…
Well, anyway, many people are now talking about the miraculous effects of Pei Pa Koa online.
In the report, according to Alex Schweder, an architect and professor of design at Pratt Institute: “I’d been super sick for a week and half and couldn’t stop coughing.”
Mr Schweder’s girlfriend then gave him a bottle of Pei Pa Koa.
“This started working in 15 minutes,” said Mr Schweder. “I’ve probably gotten about five people to try it, but I’ve told many more.”
Even Matthew Modine, an actor currently starring in “Stranger Things”, bought a bottle on Amazon for about $30.
“I got a bottle of it in the height of my flu which seemed to hang about this year for two months deep in my chest and not let go,” said Matthew Modine.
A quick look at the comments section of the article shows…well, mixed reactions as usual. (What were you expecting, it’s an “unconventional” remedy after all)
On one side of the equation, we have the loyal supporters of Pei Pa Koa!
And at the other end of the equation, we have the sceptics!
And uh, we also have the “what-am-I-reading” type of comments.
Okay, this is… unique. Do any of you guys actually put Pei Pa Koa on your food?
Anyway, I don’t know about you guys, but I’ve been using Pei Pa Koa for many years and I’m still alive and kicking.
I guess I’ll keep using it until I suffer liver failure or something(kek).
That being said, please do seek treatment if you’re sick. Herbal remedies like Pei Pa Koa are more like Lozenges. It soothes your throat and all, but might not necessarily cure you of your ailments!
