While we are busy being excited over the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, things aren’t that rosy over in China.
Some time back, Peng Shuai, three-time Olympian and tennis star of China accused Zhang Gaoli, the former vice-premier of China, of sexually assaulting her.
Shortly after, her accusations were swept under the rug and she disappeared both online and offline.
The Women Tennis Association (WTA) were concerned about her safety and threatened to move out of China if:
- China can’t prove that Peng Shuai is safe
- The allegations of sexual assault are not investigated
This, naturally, prompted a flurry of photos and videos of Peng Shuai being alive and well.
She was photographed and filmed at her home, attending a tennis event in Beijing and a private dinner.
Which is all well and good, except they’re all provided by Chinese media, which made many suspicious and worried.
If you’re a fan of Peng Shuai and concerned about her safety, you’ll be happy to know that she’s likely healthy.
At least healthy enough to make a live call.
Peng Shuai Now Went on Video Call With IOC President to Prove That She’s Safe
On 21 Nov 2021, Peng got on a video call with International Olympics Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach.
The call lasted 30 minutes, the IOC said, and Bach was accompanied by the chair of the IOC Athletes’ Commission, Emma Terho, and IOC Member in China Li Lingwei.
During the call, she reportedly assured the trio that she was safe and well, and is currently dwelling at her home in Beijing.
She added that she would like her privacy respected during this time.
However, she assures, she will still be involved in tennis.
Doing Fine
According to Terho, Peng seems to be doing fine.
She seems “relaxed”, and when they offered their support and to stay in touch, Peng appreciated the gesture.
Peng also “gladly” accepted a future dinner appointment with Bach, Terho and Li, which is scheduled for January 2022.
The Allegation
In her Weibo post, Peng revealed that she had an on-off relationship with Zhang and that he had “forced” her into sex at one point.
“I was very scared”, she said. “I initially refused and kept crying.” They continued to have a relationship after that, she said. She said she has no evidence of the relationship, but said Zhang’s wife knew about it.
“Even if it is no more than throwing an egg against a rock, I – courting disaster like a moth attracted to a flame – will speak the facts about what happened,” she wrote.
The post seems to have been deleted soon after it was put up, though Weibo confirmed that Peng had indeed posted something that day that was viewed over 100,000 times.
There are also no search results when Peng and Zhang’s names are entered together on China’s tightly controlled internet.
