Recently, Peng Shuai, a Chinese tennis star who alleged that Zhang Gaoli, the former vice-premier of China, had sexually assaulted her has “disappeared” online and offline.

Due to such disappearances, the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) threaten to exit China if China can’t prove that Peng is safe.

After various photos and a suspicious email, it seems that the media in China is trying to make a U-turn on things by providing more photos and videos of Peng but things still seem pretty suspicious.

New videos of Peng were finally raised on Twitter after the world wondered where she was. This time, Peng was at a tennis tournament in Beijing on 21 Nov.

The first clip shows Peng Shuai smiling and waving at the opening ceremony.

Official photos of her were taken and videos of her at the tournament could also be seen.

In the next clip, she was dressed in a dark blue jacket and white trousers while she signed large-sized tennis balls for the kids.

According to the manager, Zhou Hongmei, seven people were at the Sichuanese restaurant. They ate in a private room and were joined by the restaurant owner.

Two clips of Peng at the restaurant surfaced:

In the first clip, it showed Peng interacting with the others naturally because it is totally natural to have a camera pointing in your face while you speak.

In the caption, they also stated, “The video content clearly shows they are shot on Saturday Beijing time.”

If you’re watching the video and wondering, why the caption state “clearly shows” when there’s no calendar, that’s because the people in the video were chatting about how “tomorrow is 21 Nov” so that is enough proof that the video was taken in the present day.

Insufficient Evidence

Although photos and videos of Peng have surfaced on the internet, these are still considered insufficient evidence for:

  • It is unclear if she’s able to make decisions and take actions on her own
  • All of these videos and photos are taken by state media reporters

Responding to the footage, Steve Simon, the chair and CEO of the WTA feel that the video alone is insufficient for she is still concerned about Peng’s wellbeing and the fact that the allegations of sexual assault are being censored and swept under the rug.

In short, things are still looking suspicious.
