Getting stuck in a body bag and being sent to the morgue while still alive sounds like something straight out of a horror movie.
But for an elderly man in Shanghai, this was no fictional scene.
Unzipped Body Bag to Find Live Person
On Sunday (1 May), a video was posted on Twitter, showing three people in protective suits huddled around a body bag that was being taken out of a black van.

According to South China Morning Post, this happened outside the Shanghai Xinchangzheng welfare hospital in Changzheng, Putuo district.
In the video, two mortuary workers can be seen unzipping the body bag in front of a nursing home employee.
What happens next seems to shock them all as they step back.
The person inside was still alive.
The staff member reseals the bag before going to speak to two other workers in hazmat suits. They then return to the van to wheel the man back into the nursing home.
Went Viral Online
The video quickly went viral on social media, leaving many horrified and in disbelief.
Weibo users even called it “intentional homicide” and remarked that the man could have been buried or cremated alive.
However, it is still unclear whether the man had COVID-19, or how the nursing home could have committed such a grave error in the first place.

Staff Fired From Nursing Home
On Monday (2 May), Putuo district authorities confirmed the incident and announced an investigation into the matter.
Four people, including the head of the nursing home and other officials, were fired. The director of the district civil affairs bureau is also under investigation, and one doctor’s licence was revoked.
The nursing home has apologised for its severe mistake but has also been penalised by the government.
Fortunately, the elderly man is now receiving treatment in the hospital and is in stable condition.
Not the First Such Incident
In another Twitter post, a video shows a Chinese lady claiming that she witnessed a man who was still alive being tied up and placed in a body bag to be cremated.

The incident had apparently occurred in Wuhan in 2020 when the country was rife with COVID-19.
With many countries unable to cope with the overwhelming number of COVID-19 patients, it would not be completely unlikely that such horrifying situations did occur and were not accidental.
