As of writing, nearly 50,000 people have signed a petition for Prince Harry to give up his royal titles

The Change.org petition was started by royal expert Lady Colin Campbell, and it aims for Prince Harry to “voluntarily ask The Queen to put his royal style, titles and rank into abeyance”.

Here’s all that you need to know about the petition.

The post attached to the petition states that doing so would “[free] him from the diplomatic, political and constitutional constraints that are an inevitable part of royal rank, and further freeing him from the constitutional conflicts which his beliefs are creating”.

The post further adds that by doing do, Prince Harry would be able to “indulge his personal beliefs, as is the right of all private citizens” and that he would be free to “articulate beliefs, no matter how objectionable, without the fallout that is inevitable as long as he possesses royal status”.

Lady Campbell revealed that she decided to start the petition after she had engaged in discussions with many others, and she felt that it “was the right thing to do”.

She stated that this was the “best solution” as Prince Harry would be able to “indulge himself without consequence and without doing damage to the institution of the monarchy of the British nation, the British people and himself.”

This appeal comes after Prince Harry’s decision to relinquish his role as a full-time royal in 2020 and move to America with his wife, Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, and their two-year-old son Archie.

Since this decision, the couple did an explosive tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey. Meghan opened up about the mental health struggles she had dealt with after becoming a part of the royal family, sharing that she had experienced suicidal thoughts while pregnant with her son Archie.

She also made allegations of racism within the royal family, as an unnamed member of the family had raised concerns about her son’s skin colour.

They further revealed feelings of entrapment within the royal family, with personal freedoms being severely curbed.

In addition, Prince Harry recently shared in the Apple TV+ docuseries The Me You Can’t See” about how the death of his mother, Princess Diana, in 1997 had affected his life.

The couple also launched Archewell Inc. in October 2020, which revolves around non-profit activities and creative media initiatives.

Lady Campbell said that relinquishing his royal titles would allow Prince Harry to pursue a media career “without consequence”.
