The road is a dangerous place.
We’re sometimes so focused on getting to our destination that we forget to observe basic safety guidelines.
Other times, our vehicles are faulty, and there’s nothing we can do when we lose control of it.
Either way, when something like this happens, you’d better hope no one is in the line of impact, as they could end up getting hurt.
Lorry Transporting Workers Skidded on PIE, Knocking Down a Motorcyclist & Taxi
A video of a lorry skidding along the Pan Island Expressway (PIE) and knocking down a taxi and motorcyclist is making the rounds on social media.
The incident reportedly occurred at around 7pm yesterday (30 Sep), and appears to have taken place on the road near a bus stop opposite Catholic Junior College.
Footage of the accident was shared on the Facebook page Beh Chia Lor – Singapore Road.
At the beginning of the video, we see a lorry travelling in the middle lane.
Nothing seems to be amiss on the road, but the lorry suddenly skids to the right just before passing the overhead bridge.
This whole time, a taxi and motorcyclist had been travelling on the rightmost lane of the expressway.
So, when the lorry abruptly swerves towards them, the cabbie steps on the brakes, but can’t avoid a collision.
The taxi smashes into the side of the lorry, while the motorcyclist slams into the front of the skidded vehicle.
The taxi moves forward a few metres before coming to a halt, while the biker, who’s on the ground, moves himself to the side of the road, near the centre divider, where he could be seen writhing in pain.
What Happened? Netizens Weigh In
As with most pieces of traffic accident footage, it’s often hard to ascertain what went wrong.
One netizen, who commented on the Facebook post, believes the lorry had an issue with its brakes, since it skidded on a dry road with no oil spills.
He surmised that the brakes on the right side of the vehicles were stronger or more efficient than the left side, causing uneven braking.
As a result, the left side swung to the right when the driver stepped on the brakes.
As for why the lorry braked all of a sudden, the poster believes the driver was trying to avoid the taxi in front which was changing lanes.
