Thanks to COVID-19, some of our favourite shops are closing down. From the KFC at Bugis Village to Chinatown Food Street, it seems like things are not looking good for business owners.
Unfortunately, this popular provision shop in Tiong Bahru suffers the same fate as well.
Popular Provision Shop in Tiong Bahru Closing Down After 54 Years There
Pin Pin Piau Kay, a popular provision shop in Tiong Bahru is closing down after five decades.
Located along Seng Poh Lane and Seng Poh Road, the convenience store will be closing on Sunday (7 Nov).
According to the large banner in front of the shop, the provision shop may come back in the future. As of now, they will be “working from home”.
The heartful banner also contains a thank you message for Tiong Bahru for the memories they’ve gathered there.
Opened in 1938
Although the banner said that the shop has served the public for 54 years, the shop was actually opened in 1938 after the first generation owner arrived from China.
The current owner, Mr Rodney Goh is the third-generation owner and he has been helping up the second-generation owner (his father), ever since he was a little boy.
He took over the shop when he was in his 20s.
His son also took over a part of the provision shop but it was converted into a music studio, D-Flat Studios.
That part of the provision shop was recently closed after 10 years.
However, his son will be continuing with his music studio at Tanglin. According to the website, the music studios have expanded across the borders at Sunway Geo Avenue as well.
The Provision Shop Have Everything
As the shop was located in a hipster area of Singapore, the provision shop was stocked up to meet everyone’s needs.
From quinoa to clogs (cha kia), the shop sold everything that the customers demanded.
Additionally, the customers trusted their services a lot. Some of their regular customers often drop them their shopping list, before heading to the nearby Tiong Bahru Wet Market to complete the other part of their shopping list.
When they return, the customers’ items would have been bagged up and ready for them. That is what I call efficient shopping.
It is no doubt that many of their customers are upset about their closure.
