To lockdown or not to lockdown, that’s the question in everyone’s mind yesterday (23 Oct). However, according to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, locking down is not an option yet.
Instead, imposing new measures to ensure the citizens’ safety is the route that we’re currently taking.
PM Lee Gives Feedback About Latest COVID-19 Measures; Says Cannot Lockdown Indefinitely
Yesterday’s (23 Oct) press conference introduced various new measures that included Sinovac-CoronaVac being under the National Vaccination Programme and unvaccinated individuals being restricted from the workplace from 1 Jan 2022.
These new measures come after the COVID-19 cases were recorded to be doubling every two weeks. Recently, the cases have reduced but the reductions are still not enough.
However, that does not mean that Singapore should stop everything and go into an indefinite lockdown, for this will not only disrupt our lives but the economy as well.
Does that mean we should “let go and let things rip”? No.
Living with COVID-19
According to PM Lee, “we have to travel this road to get to living safely with COVID-19”.
These new measures and restrictions that are ever-changing reflect the gahmen’s judgement on the best way to put the virus back in its place.
The goal is to live safely with COVID-19 with as few casualties as possible.
PM Lee also understands the frustrations and concerns the citizens are going through especially those in the food and beverage industry.
Thus, he encouraged everyone to continue doing their part in exercising social responsibility and getting vaccinated fully or with a booster shot.
It is proven that by getting vaccinated, they will reduce their chances of getting seriously ill or ending up in the ICU.
Fully Vaccinated Individuals Reduce Their Chances of Getting Seriously Ill
According to the data from the Ministry of Health, those that are vaccinated drastically reduce their chances of getting seriously ill.
From 1 May to 16 Sep, none of the fully vaccinated patients that were below the age of 70 was admitted to the ICU or passed away from COVID-19.
Those who are fully vaccinated and in their 70s have a lower risk of needing ICU care as well.
Additionally, most fully vaccinated COVID-19 positive patients are asymptomatic and they tend to be this way till recovery.
