Pokémon GO Buddy System Confirmed: Now you can have Pikachu at your side & It’s Disappointing

If you’ve been following all the news about Pokémon GO, you’ll know that one of the features that is rumoured to be out is Buddy Pokémon.

Working much like how a Pikachu is tagged with Ash in the animated series, Buddy Pokémon will have a Pokémon tagged to you. Here’s The Pokémon GO Development Team’s announcement in full to confirm this new feature.

Hi everyone,

It’s been a busy summer and, in addition to battling bots and fixing bugs, we’ve also been busy working on some new features for our Pokémon GO Trainers. As you know, we recently released the new Pokémon Appraisal feature, which helps Trainers identify which Pokémon has the most potential for battle. Today we wanted to let you know about a new feature for the game that is just around the corner.

The next addition to Pokémon GO will be Buddy Pokémon. You will be able to pick your favorite Pokémon from your collection to become your buddy, opening up unique in-game rewards and experiences. Buddy Pokémon will appear alongside your Trainer avatar on your profile screen, adding helpful bonuses such as awarding Candy for walking together. You’ll also have the ability to change your Buddy Pokémon at any time.

We’ve got a lot more in the works this fall. Stay tuned here for all the details.

It’s still pretty unclear the full benefits of Buddy Pokémon except for your Buddy Pokémon awarding Candy while “walking together”. I’m not sure about you, but given a choice, I would rather the team work on trading instead of yet another pretty much useless feature.

With the number of Pokémon GO players dwindling, and The Pokémon GO Development Team keeps on coming out with updates like Appraisal System and Buddy Pokémon, both which just enhance the cosmetics of the game but not the gameplay, they might just lose more players until our dearest Mew is out or when trading is available.

Just sayin’.
