According to Channel News Asia, the Polling Day for the next Presidential candidate of Singapore has been decided on.
And it will be on September 23. The best part? It’s a public holiday! *Cue cheers*
Like, wow! Another public holiday! A short work week! Woohoooooo!
So there you are, chionging to your calendar because you cannot take it. You need to know which day it is.
You scroll through your calendar…
And you realised that September 23 is a Saturday.
PM Lee…
But we can’t mope over it forever. In the meantime, why don’t we get ready for the Polling Day by getting up-to-date with the latest news?
Lee Hsien Loong’s writ of election
Nomination Day set on September 13; Polling Day set on September 23
After Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong issued a writ of election on August 28 (Mon), the Elections Department announced that should more than one person qualifies to run for President, the Presidential Election will be held on Sep 23.
The Nomination Day will be set on September 13 at the People’s Association headquarters at 9 King George’s Avenue.
If there’s only one qualified Presidential candidate, he or she will commence the Presidential term on the working day after Nomination Day.
This Presidential Election will be reserved for Malay Candidates
That’s right; the next President of the Lion City will be a Malay, and so far three have expressed interest in running: businessman Mohamed Salleh Marican, Bourbon Offshore Asia Pacific chairman Farid Khan and former Speaker of Parliament Halimah Yacob.
So far, Mr Marican and Mr Farid have submitted their applications but it was yet undecided if they are able to run for the presidency.
Acting president
After President Tony Tan Keng Yam’s Presidential term expires on Aug 31, an Acting President will take over the office until Dr Tan’s successor is selected.
Mr J Y Pillay, the Chairman of the Council of Presidential Advisers, will be taking over the position of Acting President.
Thoughts
It’s that time again, huh? We got to pick a Presidential candidate that hopefully does a great job at running the country, and I wonder whom out of the three best fits the bill?
But the more important thing is at stake.
Can we maybe shift the Polling Day to a weekday? Just so that we get a short work week?
