Prime Drinks Are Still Sold in Singapore Despite High Caffeine Contents

Prime, an energy drink, is known to contain high levels of caffeine. But it is still sold in Singapore.

The catch is that it is not recommended for those under the age of 18.

Prime, an energy drink originating from America, claims to be able to erase your fatigue while helping you retain your body’s water content.

It also claims to be able to help you restore your muscle’s abilities.

Sounds magical, right?

It’s no wonder that this drink is found in most popular online retailers, physical stores and vending machines.

Many young students are also the target audience of Prime, purchasing this glitzed up energy drink.

It Raised Eyebrows for Its High Caffeine Content

While Prime is popular, it recently caught the eye of the American food authorities for containing an excessive amount of caffeine.

Zaoabo reports that it was revealed in July this year that each can of Prime energy drink contains 200 mg of caffeine. That is equivalent to the caffeine content in six cans of Coca Cola and double the amount in Red Bull.

As a result of this high caffeine content, Prime drinks have a warning label on its body that those under 18 should not drink the drink.

However, this packaging is not too different from the caffeine-free version of Prime so some could find it difficult to tell the two types of drinks apart.

The high caffeine content is a concern because it could harm the children who drink it. This risk is compounded by the brand’s marketing targeting children.

In addition, Prime’s ambassadors include YouTube personalities Logan Paul and KSI, who young children like.

This could increase the drink’s appeal to children who should not be drinking the drink.

Singapore’s Authorities Have Not Prohibited the Sale of Prime in Singapore

Given the concerns about Prime, what is Singapore’s stance?

In Singapore, it appears that Prime is still not banned.

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) replied Zaobao’s queries about the excessive levels of caffeine the in drink saying that Singapore does not have any guidelines on the maximum amount of caffeine permissible in a drink.

This means that Prime cannot exceed the targets since there is no maximum target.

However, the SFA still cautions people to be alert when purchasing the drinks, urging consumers to read the labels carefully to be aware of what they consume.
