Summary of the First Day of Pritam Singh’s Trial, Simplified For You

Today is the first day of Pritam Singh’s trial. Unlike Iswaran’s trial, which surprised everyone and ended sooner than expected, Mr Singh’s trial proceeded as anticipated, with no major surprises.

The trial is expected to last for 16 days, ending on 13 November 2024.

Of course, if Mr Singh pleads guilty at any point, the trial would end immediately.

If you’ve forgotten about the case, watch this to the end for a quick refresher:

So, what did we learn from today’s hearing?

Summary of the First Day of Pritam Singh’s Trial, Simplified For You

Being the first day of the trial, not many new details were revealed.

Most of the day was spent with the prosecution laying out the timeline of events and presenting their case against Mr Singh.

They are proceeding with both charges against him.

Raeesah Khan then took the stand as the first witness, mostly reiterating what she had said during the Committee of Privileges (COP) hearing.

However, there was one new development: the prosecution presented their witness list, which includes former Workers’ Party (WP) chief Low Thia Khiang, two former WP cadres (Loh Pei Ying and Yudhishthra Nathan, both of whom also appeared during the COP hearing), and a police investigator.

Mr Low’s inclusion is notable because it gave us some insight into how he learned about the Raeesah Khan incident.

It was mentioned that on 11 October 2021, a crucial meeting took place at Mr. Low’s house, involving Mr Low, Mr Singh, and Ms Sylvia Lim (WP chairman). During this meeting, Mr Low was informed that Raeesah Khan’s anecdote in Parliament was false.

Mr Low advised both Mr Singh and Ms Lim that Ms Khan should clarify the false statement in Parliament as soon as possible. He also recommended that she apologize.

The prosecution plans to present evidence from Mr Low regarding the advice he gave to Mr Singh and Ms Lim, as well as details of their exchange during that meeting.

His testimony is expected to last less than a day.

The trial will resume tomorrow (15 October), with Ms Khan expected to continue her testimony.

Oh, just for your info, Xiaxue was there, too.
