Be careful about transactions on the internet, even when it seems legit.
People have been getting scammed by fake PropNex property agents as they send over $1,000 as a deposit before viewing the houses… and then never hearing from the agent ever again.
Use Details of Real Agents To Scam Victims, Disappear After Payment Received
PropNex key executive office Lim Yong Hock revealed to Shin Min Daily News that they received complaints of fake PropNex agents scams.
These fake agents will use the photo, name, and licence number of a real PropNex agent on rental websites, and use their personal numbers to liaise with the victims.
The victim would be told that they’ll need to pay a $1,000 deposit before seeing the unit, and that the money will be refunded after viewing the house.
However, on the day when they’re supposed to view the house, the victim waited for over an hour with no agent in sight. The scammer would then become uncontactable.
PropNex was alerted to this scam when the victim contacted the actual property agent.
Property Agents Not Authorised To Handle Transactions
Mr Lim urged the public to not make payments before viewing a unit. He also revealed that property agents are actually not allowed to handle cash transactions.
If a client wants to rent a house, they should sign a Letter of Intent, then pay a one-month deposit. The client will then have to sign a tenancy agreement.
No deposits should be made before any viewing.

If you’re unsure whether a listing is legit or not, you can check whether the agent’s contact number matches the one on the Council for Estate Agencies’ website.
PropNex does not tolerate such scams, and will be reporting these cases to the police.
