Everything About the Disagreement Between RP & PSP Simplified for You

People always think that in Singapore politics, there are two main blocks fighting against each other: the PAP and the opposition parties.

I mean, just look at RP’s post about pulling out from the West Coast area because PSP is interested in it:

Well, turns out, there’s more to this post than just pulling out from West Coast GRC:

It was a declaration of a “gentlemen’s agreement’ between the Reform Party (RP) and the Progress Singapore Party (PSP).

One that PSP has allegedly broken.

First thing first,

The Agreement:

  • Reform Party pulls out of West Coast GRC
  • In return, PSP will withdraw from various grounds they were “eyeing”
  • Therefore, Reform Party will contest in Ang Mo Kio GRC, Yio Chu Kang SMC and Radin Mas SMC.

It was added that both parties had a long talk before coming to this conclusion.

Agreement Broken

Reform Party took to their Facebook page again, this time to cry foul.

They say that Dr Tan Cheng Bock is not going to ‘honour’ his side of the deal, and it seems like PSP will be contesting in Yio Chu Kang SMC too:

Calling it a “dishonest” act, RP said that “any deal” they had must be “presumed dead in the water”.

That’s chim English to say that the agreement is no more.

PSP Apologises, Says There’s No “Formal Agreement”

The Progress Singapore Party (PSP) was surprised at the Reform Party’s claims.

Their assistant-secretary general, Leong Mun Wai, said that no formal agreement was made.

According to him, while they did have a long talk (as mentioned in RP’s post), they couldn’t reach an agreement:

“Unfortunately we didn’t actually arrive — agree — to a formal agreement. There was no agreement between the two parties but there were a lot of ideas and principles that were discussed. So we were very surprised that they came out to say that there’s an agreement and we are breaking the agreement.”

Kenneth Jeyaretnam is an “honourable” man, Leong says.

But, he added, any ideas that both of them have discussed must be run through by the PSP executive committee for approval.

Nevertheless, he’s open to apologising to RP for any misunderstanding caused:

“Nevertheless, if there’s a misunderstanding, then I would like to apologise to Ken and RP for the misunderstanding.”

He urges for RP to stop their attacks against Dr Tan Cheng Bock, who he thinks is a man of integrity, and ask for all to focus on the upcoming General Elections instead.
