On 15 February 2022 (a Tuesday), don’t be surprised if you hear a loud siren in Singapore at around 6:20pm.
It’s not because Fairprice is running out of fishes or our ICUs have no more beds.
It’s just a testing of the Public Warning System.
SCDF to Sound Public Warning System Sirens on 15 Feb 2022, 6:20pm
The Public Warning System will sound a minute-long “important message” signal on 15 Feb 2022 at 6:20pm, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) announced.
SCDF asks members of the public not to be alarmed at the sirens that’ll be heard all around the island.
Once the sirens are heard, members of the public can tune in to any local radio station or free-to-air Mediacorp television channel for a brief message
Will Sound on Smartphones Too
If your smartphone has the SGSecure mobile app installed, it’ll sound on your phone as well unless you’ve set it to silent or vibrate mode.
In other words, if you have an important meeting at that time, put it on silent.
The siren on the phones will stop after twenty seconds, or after the message has been acknowledged.
Annual Exercise
This testing of the Public Warning System is part of an annual exercise SCDF conducts to familiarise members of the public with the system.
It is also an opportunity for SCDF to teach the public how to react in times of real emergencies.
Also, 15 February 1942 was also the date when the British forces in Singapore surrendered to the Japanese.
The Various Sirens And What It Means
For those who are unfamiliar with the Public Warning System, you can head over to SCDF’s website to find out more.
There are three different versions of the alarm:
- “Alarm ” Signal: When an air raid or shelling is imminent; the public should head to the shelters
- “All Clear ” Signal: When the threat is over; you can leave the shelter
- “Important Message ” Signal: Alert members of the public to an important broadcast on TV or radio; tune in to any local radio station or free-to-air Mediacorp television channel
If you have any queries regarding the sounding of the Public Warning System, you can contact SCDF via their hotline: 1800 367 7233
