Yesterday’s Rain Didn’t Just Cause Multiple Floods; It also Hit a 40-Year Record

If you went to bed on Friday night and woke up today morning, you might be a little dazed and confused.

Reader: How the heck did I just sleep for 36 hours?

One word, my dear reader: heavy and persistent rains.

Reader: Okay, but that’s like four words.

There’s just something about the pitter patter of the rain and the lower temperatures that put us to sleep like a baby listening to a lullaby.

While you were deep in sleep dreaming of leisure travel, however, trees were falling down, streets were flooded, and records were being broken.

Specifically a 40-year record.

Yesterday’s (17 Apr) heavy downpour was unlike any other in recent times.

The rain poured down so heavily that 161.4mm of rain fell in western Singapore from 12:25pm to 3:25pm.

Is 161.4mm a lot? Heck yes. 

According to PUB, this amount corresponds to 91% of Singapore’s average monthly rainfall in April, and lies within the top 0.5% of maximum daily rainfall records since 1981.

And with such heavy rains, problems are bound to arise.

Streets Across Singapore Flooded

PUB issued a warning yesterday of flash floods after water levels in drains and canals reached 90% in dozens of locations across the country.

Netizens soon began uploading videos of flooded streets in Bukit Timah, Dunearn, and Queenstown, to name a few.

More pictures of flooded areas soon popped up, this time in Ulu Pandan.

Even bus stops were flooded, meaning any hypebeasts waiting for a bus would have likely had to stand on the seats to avoid getting their precious sneakers soiled.

According to CNA, the police had to cordon off a road in Jurong East because of how severe the floods were.

2 Trees Collapse

Two trees also fell victim to the thundery showers, according to MS News.

In the first incident, a tree outside Block 166, Bukit Batok West Avenue 8 collapsed, falling on at least 3 lorries.

It’s unknown if anyone was inside the vehicles when the tree fell, or if anyone was injured as a result.

The second incident occurred at Lower Delta Road at about 2.45pm. A video of the incident was captured on the road by a passing driver.

The tree appears to have fallen on a yellow hatchback on the leftmost lane.

Hopefully, no one was injured in either incident.

As for you, dear reader, this article is done and you can keep sleeping for the rest of April, as the second half of the month will still be wet.
