Ramadan bazaars are coming back and we couldn’t be happier.
If you visited a Ramadan bazaar at Downtown East over the weekend, you are one of the lucky few to be able to do so.
But you would also have contributed to the business of an illegal operation.

Say what?
Fret not, visitors to the bazaar are not in any hot soup. Instead, it is the operator who is.
Operated Fair Without Permit
The temporary fair “Fiesta Ramadan 2022” had been operating at E!Hub@Downtown East since last Saturday (9 Apr) without a valid temporary fair permit, said the Singapore Food Agency (SFA).
As of Tuesday (12 Apr), the fair has been suspended by the SFA.
This came after SFA officers conducted an inspection of the place on Monday and found eight food stalls to be in operation.
SFA said it had not approved the application by Event Business Management Pte Ltd for a permit to operate the temporary fair from 9 to 24 April.
“It had not met SFA’s requirements such as providing information on the cleaning schedule and list of food vendors, as well as whether the food handlers have undergone the required food hygiene training and are certified to handle food items,” SFA said.

Ignored Warning to Stop Operating
To make matters worse, the company also ignored a warning given on Monday to stop the fair.
Enforcement action will be taken against it for the offence of operating a temporary fair without a permit.
Under the Environmental Public Health Act, all operators of temporary fairs must get a permit from SFA for the duration of the fair.
Applications should be submitted at least two weeks before the fair commencement date.
Food and beverage stalls at temporary fairs are also required to be licensed by SFA, with food handlers who have passed the mandatory Food Safety Course Level 1.

SFA will take enforcement action against temporary fair operators who do not adhere to regulations. Offenders can be fined up to $10,000.
In the case of a subsequent conviction, offenders can be fined up to $20,000, imprisoned for up to 3 months or both.
Other Food Bazaars
Currently, other bazaars that are set to operate are the one located in Punggol starting next week and the two at Tampines which start in May.
Don’t worry about visiting those though, because they have been certified to operate so you can fill your stomach in peace.
