Since the emergence of the pandemic, numerous racially motivated attacks have graced foreign countries, with poor, innocent individuals of Asian heritage bearing the brunt of it.
And though the following assault may not have actually carried racist intentions, it did revolve around a Singaporean’s brutal beat-up by a foreign man… which may bring the 2020 Jonathan Mok case to mind.
21YO S’porean Student Attacked by Man With Knife in London; Left With Cut on His Face
According to The Straits Times, a Singaporean student was assaulted by a knife-wielding man in Leicester Square, at around 1:00am on 10 April 2021.
Apparently, Mr Raymond Hing, 21, had been on his bicycle when he was attacked, with the perpetrator reportedly staging an attempt to steal his bicycle.
It’s unclear whether any racial bias was involved.
The episode was documented by a British YouTuber, who happened to be livestreaming at the time.
As the YouTuber, Sherwin, rushed to the student’s aid, the latter could be seen sitting on the ground with a cut on his face.
Though the attacker initially retreated at the YouTuber’s protestations, he could be seen making a final lunge for Mr Hing’s bicycle.
Sherwin’s interference, however, coupled with the emergence of more bystanders, ultimately ended the fiasco.
The attacker began to walk away, before rapidly breaking into a sprint.
As for Mr Hing, he could only reiterate the phrase “call the police” as he sprawled on the floor, in evident disbelief at what he had just gone through.
You can view said video down below. The incident occurs at the 6:05:13 timestamp. As of writing, the video has accumulated over 161,000 views.
Recuperating
More than one week on, Mr Hing has reportedly recovered from the ordeal.
“I have recuperated and I am feeling better—still alive and kicking,” he declared.
No arrest has been made.
“Officers attended and it was reported that a 21-year-old man had been assaulted by a man who attempted to steal his bike,” said a spokesman for the Metropolitan Police. “The victim was treated by London Ambulance Service at the scene. He declined further treatment.”
“Officers carried out a thorough search of the area, however no suspect was located. There have been no arrests.”
Similar Occurences
Many of us would naturally remember an all-too familiar case, in which a Singaporean student was also attacked in the U.K.
On 24 February 2020, Jonathan Mok, who had been studying in London for 2 years, was walking along Oxford Street when he came across a group of young men who were talking among themselves.
Suddenly, he heard the word “coronavirus” and turned around to look at them.
Angry, one of the men told him, “Don’t you look at me, you…” and punched him repeatedly in the face.
A group of passers-by attempted to stop the assault.
Another man added that he “doesn’t want his coronavirus in his country” and punched him as well.
The group fled from the scene before the police arrived.
According to news reports, the London police force later released 4 photos of suspects.
A 16-year-old boy has since been slapped with an 18-month youth rehabilitation order.
And on 30 October 2020, Malaysian comedian Nigel Ng, who portrays Uncle Roger on video-sharing site Youtube, was walking home from lunch when someone supposedly came up to him and walloped him in the face.
“This random guy just came up and punched me in my face,” he said.
Ng speculated that it was a racist assault, similar to the beating Mr Mok had endured in London some time ago.
“I’m guessing its probably COVID-racism related, which is really really shitty. Good thing he wasn’t a great fighter,” said Ng.
