Remember this tall-looking ang moh dude?
You might’ve forgotten.
He’s the one who walked into a Standard Chartered bank in Singapore, robbed it and successfully escaped from the country.
You might even have thought he’s laughing on the way to his bank right now.
Well, guess what? He can take that achievement away from his resume because he has just been sentenced to jail.
Here’s what happened.
Last year in July, David James Roach was accused of robbing a Standard Chartered bank. On the same day, he flew to Bangkok with the stolen money.
Three days later, he was arrested in a backpacker hostel by Thai policemen and has since been on remand.
Singapore attempted to get Thailand to repatriate the bank robbery suspect back to Singapore to face the judicial system.
Unfortunately, their appeal was rejected as there was no extradition treaty between the two countries. So, Singapore issued a warrant for his arrest and this leads to the Thai cancelling his right of stay within the country.
And we thought that was it.
But wait, there’s more
Now, I know it’s not good to laugh at people’s misfortune but, hot damn, justice was served. This time by the Thais.
The police in Thailand investigated him for failing to report to Thai customs that he was carrying more than US$20,000 (S$28,300) when entering the country last July (2016).
He was found with 700,000 baht (S$28,300) in cash, as well as a notebook detailing his escape plan, which included stopovers in Chiang Mai and Dubai.
Violating Customs Laws and Money Laundering
On 6 June, a Thai court found him guilty of money laundering and violating customs laws by bringing his stolen money into the country.
For that, he is sentenced to 14 months jail. And let’s not forget, he’s been arrested since July last year.
That means he only had a grand total of 3 days to spend his loot. Ouch.
Karma’s a bitch; when she comes to collect, you’d bet your ass she’ll take everything. Plus interest.
