See a $1 coin on the street? You better pick it up; it’s worth an entire month’s rental at Holland Village Market.

Someone rented a stall in Holland Village Market for just $1 a month.

Yes. $1.

Here’s what you need to know about it.

A Dollar a Month—the Lowest Rental Fee in the History of Holland Village Market

Enough with Carousell or home-based businesses. Why not try tendering for a Holland Village Market and Food Centre stall instead? If you’re lucky enough, you just might be able to score a monthly rental fee of merely $1.

Those stacks of coins you won from your cousins during Chinese New Year will finally come in handy.

Someone managed to successfully tender a stall in Holland Village Market for a monthly rental fee of just $1. According to other stall owners, this is apparently the lowest rental fee in the market’s history.

Based on the results of the National Environment Agency (NEA)’s latest hawker stall tender exercise, this stall, located at 01-51 of the market, sells beancakes and noodles.

Rental at Holland Village Market and Food Centre Usually Costs Upwards of Tens of Dollars

Stall owners interviewed by Shin Min Daily News expressed that the record-rental fee had surprised them.

A 53-year-old running three fresh fruit stalls in the market shared that when expanding his business in 2021, he managed to tender a fourth stall space successfully, but not for $1. The monthly rental he wound up with for the fourth stall cost $320.

The 53-year-old also shared that since his father started the business in 1983, he had never seen a stall rented out for merely a dollar a month.

Ladies and gentlemen, we are witnessing history. Perhaps the stall rented out for $1 should become a national monument or be inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site soon.

Cai Lili (hanyu pinyin), a 54-year-old woman operating the fresh fruit stall in the market,  shared that stall rental at the Holland Village Market usually costs upwards of tens of dollars. The 54-year-old and her husband have run their stall at the market for decades.

Apparently, between 13 January and 26 January this year, only one person had tendered for the Holland Village stall at $1. No other tenderers competed for this stall.

Ah, it’s like that one time I won a race because I was the only runner competing in that particular event. Life, indeed, is full of coincidences.

Business Prospects at Holland Village Market Still Not Particularly Good

However, Cai also noted that business in the market wasn’t great. Business is still 50% lower than before COVID-19 struck and is still recovering.

This was not made any better by the disruptions caused by the construction of HDB flats nearby and the closure of the parking lot near the market.

While this may be great for Singaporeans looking for a quiet place to have their “mouse moments”, it isn’t the best situation for a stall owner to be in.

Moreover, the stalls at the market aren’t exactly diverse either. Of the 70 stalls at Holland Village Market and Food Centre, 21 are cooked food stalls, 20 are market stalls selling mainly dry goods and fresh fruits and vegetables, and the rest are retail stalls.

And let’s be honest—you probably go to Holland Village more for the cafes and bars than the market and food centre. It’s time to pull your weight and show a little support to our hawkers too.

Stalls at AMK Market were Recently Rented Out at $1 a Month for 3 Years

There seems to be a trend of everything being $1 recently, first $1 nasi lemak and now $1 rental fees.

We hope the stall owner of the new $1 Holland Village stall isn’t kiasu because they aren’t the first in Singapore to successfully tender for a market stall for a monthly rental of $1.

A few months back, two stalls in the market at Block 160, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4, were rented out for $1 a month. Since each stall’s lease at the market is three years long, those two stalls only have to pay a $36 rental over the next three years.

With any hope, perhaps we’ll see $1 bubble tea soon.
