It’s an offence to drive without a driving licence. It’s an offence to replace a car plate. It’s also illegal for a Singaporean to drive a Malaysia-registered car in Singapore.
A man just committed all the offences…at one go.
Here’s what happened.

Man Replaces M’sia-Registered Car With a S’pore Plate & Drove It Without a Driving Licence
A 30-year-old Malaysian has just pleaded guilty to three charges in court on Monday morning (16 December).
The charges included allowing an unlicensed person to drive his car, letting an unlicensed person drive without valid insurance, and conspiring to use fake license plates. He was sentenced to seven weeks in jail, fined $800, and had his driving license suspended for two years across all categories.
So, what happened?
According to court documents, the Malaysian made an agreement with his Singaporean colleague on 22 June last year to rent out his Malaysia-registered car for $100 per day.
The Malaysian knew his colleague is a Singaporean but still rented the car to him between 22 June and 3 July last year, advising him to take precautions to avoid detection.
Upon that, the Singaporean replaced the Malaysian license plates with fake Singapore ones he had bought through Carousell.
Investigations showed that the Malaysian permitted his colleague to swap the plates.
What’s even worse is that at the time of the incident, the Singaporean did not have a driving license. As a Singaporean, he was also not permitted to drive Malaysia-registered vehicles.

So, how did he get caught?
On 1 July last year at 8:30 PM, he was watching fireworks at Tanjong Rhu Road.
Around 9 PM, he left to have dinner with friends at Parkway Parade.
While driving there, he lost control of the vehicle while turning left at the Stadium Drive.
Apparently, when he did an emergency brake, the car swerved right and crashed into a lamppost. His daughter was in the car and needed urgent medical attention.

Police and ambulance arrived shortly after, which led to his arrest.
