If you woke up to the smell of pork, you might conclude that your partner is going to surprise you with some tasty bacon for breakfast.
But when you open the door and go to the living room, you see them splayed out on the couch, reading articles on the Goody Feed app instead.
So, like a bloodhound sniffing out hidden drugs, you follow the smell of the pork and find that it’s coming from outside the house.
Upon exiting your home, you find that your neighbour has hung strips of pork meat and organs along your corridor.
This sounds like a disgusting short story, but it actually happened to some unlucky residents in Jalan Kukoh.
Resident Hangs Pork Meat & Organs Outside HDB Unit Repeatedly
A Jalan Kukoh resident living on the 7th floor of Blk 9 is not too pleased with his neighbour.
On 5 Jan, the resident discovered that his neighbour had hung pork meat and organs along the common corridor.
He was, understandably, upset.
Speaking to Shin Min Daily News, the irate resident recorded a video of the neighbour’s behaviour and reported them to the town council.
The resident complained of how unhygienic hanging meat outside one’s home is, especially since it was so close to the resident’s own apartment.
Despite being reported, the neighbour – a middle-aged woman – kept the meat and organs up on the poles, and even took them out to hang again after an inspection.
Hung 28 Pieces of Sausages
A reporter from the Chinese evening daily visited the unit on 8 Jan and found pork meat and organs still hanging outside the unit.
At the time, three pieces of pork ribs, 6 pig intestines, 8 pig ears, and at least 28 pieces of sausages were found hanging.
The meat and organs were dry and did not ooze lard or blood, but the reporter noticed a rancid smell in the area, and said some flies were buzzing around the meat and organs.
Homemade Meats with a Si Chuan Flavour
Another resident told Shin Min that the couple who hung the meat out are immigrants from China who’ve been living in the unit for years.
When the woman who hung the meats was interviewed, she said she hangs the meat and organs along the corridor to air them because the indoor ventilation isn’t as good.
She added that the meats and organs are homemade with a “Si Chuan flavour”, and cannot be found in local stores.
When interviewed, the lady wasn’t aware that hanging meats in such a manner is prohibited.
She has since removed all dried meat and organs from the corridor, according to Shin Min.
Several other residents have been slammed on social media in the past for hanging dried meats outside their apartments.
They were all making jerky, but ended up being jerks instead.
