Courier Service Tells Customer That It Refuses to Deliver to “High Risk” Bukit Merah Area After She Receives A “Failed Delivery”

Thanks or no thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve been discovering many things about life and appreciating what we have even more.

For starters, who knew we could get an entire nation crying over having no bubble tea or the simple beauty of human interaction that we don’t get much of anymore?

One of the things we’re even more thankful for in this age would be the efficiency of delivery options when we purchase things online, since we’re stuck at home.

Convenience has really been taken to the next level because all you have to do now is press a button on your phone and wait to open the door.

Most unfortunately, what has made deliveries all the more appreciated may also be halted for the very same reason: this darned pandemic.

Woman Says Delivery Company Refused to Deliver To Bukit Merah

Bukit Merah, it seems, has overtaken the bizarre Yishun area as the new reigning champion neighbourhood that appears in the news most often as of late.

All because of the numerous COVID-19 clusters that have been popping up there.

Some places have even began barring entry to people who live in the Bukit Merah area in fear of them carrying the virus as “risks”.

Guess everyone’s avoiding Bukit Merah like the plague—or in this case, COVID-19.

And now, even this particular delivery service is doing the same, according to an enraged customer who took to Facebook to share her experience.

Known as Ms Colleen, she claimed that she had ordered a parcel from Shopee, which was scheduled to be delivered on the 23 June by courier Roadbull.

She also happened to be living in the now-infamous Bukit Merah area.

Waiting and waiting for the parcel on that very morning, all she received was a message saying that the delivery had failed, but not a single ring of the doorbell or one call from the delivery personnel.

Strange, isn’t it?

Delay Due to “High Risk”

Ms Colleen then emailed Roadbull to enquire about the failed delivery attempt.

They told her that due to Bukit Merah being an area of “high risk” of COVID-19, they were thus unable to deliver her package to her home address.

Apologising for the inconvenience, they directed her to contact Shopee instead.

“When has our dear taskforce indicated that Bukit Merah is high risk of COVID?” she questioned in her post, citing that other delivery companies like Singpost or Ninjavan have no such policy mentioned.

What she felt was most unreasonable was the fact that no one had informed her prior to her purchase of the parcel being unable to be delivered to her address.

If so, she could have provided an alternate address for them to mail the parcel to, at least.

Roadbull Resumed Deliveries

In response to media queries, Roadbull explained that due to the ongoing mandatory testing programmes in the area, they had refused the delivery.

Customers could also opt to deliver to another address if they wanted to.

Since 21 June, deliveries to the Bukit Merah area had been suspended, but they’ve now been back in service following a week’s cooling period, the company added.

Affected packages would also be delivered within two days, they promised.

True to their word, Ms Colleen updated the post with thanks to netizens who advised her on what to do, saying that she had received the parcel on 28 June.

While unfair for residents of affected COVID-19 cluster areas, it’s actually also rather difficult for companies to balance keeping employees safe and good service.

May Bukit Merah’s reputation recover just like Yishun’s has.
