When you hang out with your friends, you usually do one of the following:

  1. Have a meal
  2. Watch a movie
  3. Go shopping

You might even opt for other options like going skating, or going for a round of room escape.

For some others, their idea of “fun” and hanging out with friends, apparently, consists of beating up the elderly and robbing people.

16YO Girl Charged in Court for Robbery and Housebreaking

On Wednesday (30 June), a 16-year-old girl pleaded guilty in court to one charge each of robbery with hurt and housebreaking to commit theft.

Another two charges of theft, as well as one charge of lying to a police officer will be taken into consideration during the sentencing. She had falsely told the police officer that someone had tried to rape her.

According to the Children and Young Persons Act, the girl cannot be named as she is under 18.

The teen had reportedly joined three boys to beat up a taxi driver and rob him. She also joined two of the three boys in breaking into a coffee shop to steal cigarettes worth more than $600.

The Initial Incident

On the evening of 8 October last year, the 16-year-old met up with the three boys, aged 12 to 15, at Bukit Gombak, the court heard.

Allegedly, the four of them had hatched a plan to take a taxi and run away without paying. They had planned to beat up the taxi driver and rob him if the driver gave chase.

However, when they first took a taxi to a carpark and proceeded to flee, the taxi driver did not chase them.

So what do they do?

Instead of just leaving at that, the four teens then decided to rework their plan. This time, they agreed that they would take another taxi, and beat up the taxi driver anyways even if he did not chase them.

Really, what is with their obsession with beating up people?

You know, people usually feel relieved when they don’t get chased after committing a crime. Going “Oh no, I didn’t get to beat them up. How should I make it so that I get to beat them up?” isn’t exactly a normal response.

Putting their new plan into action, the four of them then took a taxi to Sungei Tengah Road. They alighted around 11.30pm, and the three boys opened the taxi driver’s door, asking him to come out.

Meanwhile, the girl acted as a lookout.

When the taxi driver refused, the three boys beat him up, punching him in the face at least twice in the process. Afterwards, they robbed him of $256 and fled to a nearby farm.

There, they split the money that they had robbed.

According to The Straits Times, the taxi driver had suffered injuries to his face and amnesia.

Broke Into a Coffee Shop

On 11 October last year, just three days after the initial incident, the 16-year-old girl met up with two of the three boys again.

This time, they decided to break into a coffee shop in Choa Chu Kang.

The incident took place the next day on 12 October, around 1.45am. The three teens broke into the coffee shop and stole more than 50 packs of cigarettes.

The total worth of the 50 packs of cigarettes stolen amounted to more than $600.

Court Hearing

On Wednesday, the 16-year-old girl was seen hugging her mother and sobbing before entering the dock.

A report to determine the teen’s suitability for reformative training and probation was ordered by District Judge May Mesenas.

The teen will be remanded for a week. This would show her the realities of prison and serve as a wake-up call, Judge Mesenas told the 16-year-old.

As for the three boys, one has been sentenced to probation, while the other two still have their cases before the courts.
