Fans of Robert Downey Jr will be happy to hear that he will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) after five years.
However, he will not be returning to his Iron Man role. Instead, he will return as Victor von Doom, a villain in the comic books.
Lest you’ve been living under a rock, Downey Jr once played Iron Man but gave up his role after his character’s death in Avengers: Endgame.
He will now play a prominent villain, Doctor Doom in the upcoming Avengers: “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars”.

Revealed New Role At Comic Con In San Diego
The exciting news was revealed at the Comic Con event in San Diego where Downey Jr took to the stage dressed in Doctor Doom’s signature mask and green cloak.
He was accompanied by studio boss Kevin Feige and directors Anthony Russo and Joe Russo.
Joe Russo then announced, “If we’re going to bring Doctor Doom to the screen – he is one of the most complex characters, most entertaining characters in all of fiction… If we’re going to do this… then we are going to need the greatest actor in the world.”
He continues, “As proof of the unimaginable possibilities of the Marvel Universe, we give you the one person who could play Victor von Doom.”
Downey Jr then proceeds to rip his mask off and unveils himself to fans.
To add more drama to the unveiling, he is accompanied by multiple other cloaked figures standing behind him.
Later, The Russo Bros announced that they would be the producers and directors of the new Avengers films.
Who Is Doctor Doom?
If you haven’t read the comic books, you may be wondering who Doctor Doom is.
Doctor Doom is a villain who aspires to bring order to humanity through world conquest. He is the archenemy of Reed Richards and the Fantastic Four.
Despite being portrayed as a villain the majority of the time, he sometimes works with heroes if they have similar goals and if he benefits from the partnership.
Downey Jr Appeared As Tony Stark Back In 2008
Downey Jr has come a long way since he first appeared as Tony Stark in the first MCU instalment, Iron Man in 2008.
He appeared as Tony Stark in 10 MCU films spanning 11 years.
He recently won the Oscar for best supporting actor for his role as Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer.
It is Downey Jr’s first Oscar win.
