One day, technology will be advanced enough in our hawker centres such that a robot will be preparing all your food and drinks.

But as my mother likes to say, “Wait long long”. Until that day, we’ll have many “Robot Fails” videos to laugh at.

Robot Arm that Makes Kopi in Punggol Hawker Centre Fails Miserably

On Friday (28 April), a video surfaced on Facebook showing what appears to be a robot barista failing miserably at making your morning kopi.

The video was accompanied by a caption saying, “[t]his is the reason why robot baristas cannot replace human beings”.

The footage seems to be of a robot barista at One Punggol Hawker Centre, which opened its doors to the public just last year. This robot barista has been clocking hours at the hawker centre since its opening. As you would expect, the robot had its fair share of fame after being featured countless times in videos taken by various netizens.

After all, what’s not to love about a robot making your coffee for you?

Regardless, this newest video that has surfaced on Facebook seems to be the first one to expose the blunders of our little robot friend.

Coffee Container Senget; Robot Continues Pouring Coffee Anyway

In the video, when the robot arm put the coffee container down on the counter, the container appeared to be a little senget.

Maybe the robot also hasn’t had its cup of morning coffee yet. Tired lah.

Despite the container being senget, the robot arm continued doing what it was programmed to do—make coffee. It didn’t even know that it just failed terribly.

Instead, the robot picked up a second coffee container and poured coffee into the senget container.

And, of course, since the container on the counter was not standing upright, the robot arm spilt the hot coffee all over the counter.

So this… is what people say will be coming after your jobs? (just kidding)

Coffee-Making Process Not Fully Automated Yet

Fortunately, the robot arm wasn’t just left to clean up its own mess like the “Can’t Help Myself” robot trending on TikTok a while back.

A man standing by the side, presumably the owner of the beverage stall, calmly stepped in to readjust the coffee container so that the robot barista could continue doing its work.

The reason for this? The coffee-making process at the One Punggol Hawker Centre beverage stall is not fully automated yet—naturally, it’ll still run into blunders such as this one.

Apparently, the robot arm only functions to make the coffee, but sugar or milk must still be added to the coffee by staff at the beverage stall.

I guess robots may never truly replace our lovely beverage stall uncles and aunties just yet—who else will call you “Shuai Ge” or “Mei Nu“?

On the bright side, at least the robot barista won’t be yelling at you when it can’t hear your order…
