Ronaldinho in Jail for Using Fake Passport; Investigated for Even More Crimes

I know that most people have only been thinking about the COVID-19 outbreak these days, especially since it has clearly worsened over the past few days.

But we’re not going to be talking about that in this article.

We’re going to talk about Ronaldinho instead.

Who is Ronaldinho?

In case you don’t know, 39-year-old Ronaldinho is a Brazilian former professional footballer and ambassador for Barcelona.

He played mostly as the attacking midfielder but has also played as a forwarder or a winger.

Most of his career was spent playing for European clubs Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona and A.C. Milan, as well as the Brazilian national team.

Ronaldinho was even named as the FIFA world player of the year in 2004 and 2005 and also won the World Cup with Brazil in 2002 and the Champions League with Barcelona in 2006.

Despite him no longer playing professionally since 2015, he still has a lot of global football fans because of his skills and showmanship.

But apparently, not everything about him is good.

His Crimes

Ronaldinho is currently being held in a Paraguayan jail after he tried to enter Paraguay using falsified passports along with his brother and business manager, Roberto Assis.

His passport claimed that he was a naturalised Paraguayan citizen.

I thought he was Brazillian.

He is being investigated for additional crimes.

And while Osmar Legal did not explain what the crimes were, “there are indications that other crimes were committed” by Ronaldinho and Roberto.

Currently in Jail

Since the judge ruled the duo a flight risk, they must remain in jail while the investigation takes place. The Paraguayan officials have six months to complete their enquiry under Paraguayan law.

Both of them spent Friday and Saturday night in a jail cell in a maximum security facility.

They remained in their cell on Sunday because it was visiting day at the prison and they didn’t want to attract any unnecessary attention from the families of their other inmates.

Ronaldinho Says He Got The Passport As A ‘Gift’

According to Ronaldinho’s lawyer Sergio Queiroz, the Paraguayan passport was given to Ronaldinho as a “gift”, and he assumed that it was an “honorary-type” document with no real value. He then gave it to an official without thinking much when he arrived in Paraguay because it was the “first thing he got out of his bag”.

He said, “They confessed that they used these false passports, but there was no harm done to the Paraguayan state. Roberto and Ronaldinho did not know that the passports were irregular. And they cooperated fully with authorities.”

It is still unclear what really happened, and what other crimes they could have committed, but hopefully, the truth will be revealed after the investigation is done.
