Singaporeans are definitely no strangers to good food and specialty markets.
Whether it’s the ubiquitous Korean and Japanese specialty supermarkets that sell imported snacks and groceries, the value stores where we hoard all kinds of goodies, or those small mamak shops tucked in the corners of HDB flats, selling our old childhood snacks, we know them all.
As it turns out, Singapore has a Russian supermarket nestled quietly on River Valley Road, which opened in July 2021.
The Russian supermarket has gained some attention recently when a Redditor shared the store’s location and products online last Sunday (20 Feb).
Like any speciality supermarkets, it definitely doesn’t lack the defining products from Russia, ranging from pelmeni dumplings, Alyonka (Алёнка) chocolates, fruit halvas, and kvass.
Naturally, in the true Russian spirit, there is a selection of Vodka to choose from as well.
Stocked with Russian Meats, Seafood, and Snacks
The Russian Supermarket is under E-E Goods, which mainly engages in bringing Eastern European foodstuffs into the Southeast Asian market.
You’re almost spoiled for choice in this particular market, for they sell rare commodities like smoked foods like dried squid or Baltic Herrings, some unique condiments like horseradish sauce, and even some original Soviet Standard Sausages and beef jerky.
If you feel like delving more into the Russian cuisine specifically, but feel intimidated at where to start, look no further than their instant Borscht soups which skip all the beet processing, or perhaps even their array of frozen pelmeni dumplings.
According to some of the Redditors, there are some must-try snacks like Alyonka (Алёнка) chocolates, apple-flavoured marshmallows called Zephir, and sunflower seeds.
I don’t know what makes Russian sunflower seeds that much better, but it was on the recommendation list, so I’ll take their word for it.
Besides that, the Redditors also mentioned that Russian dairy products from the 1930s are a “steal”, as well as Russian ice cream.
Add that to your cart if that interests you, why not?
Never Forget the Alcohol
Last but not the least, is the alcoholic beverage section.
The Russian supermarket is definitely stocked with a few classic Vodka brands at reasonable prices, and they have other beverages like wines, beers, and sweet drinks too.
If hard liquor isn’t your go-to, Kvass might be another good alternative.
Kvass is a type of fermented cereal-based non-alcoholic or low-alcoholic—0.5% to 2% alcohol content at most—that has a sweet and sour tang to it.
It can also come with a mix of spices, berries, and bread crust too.
Or heck, if you just want to prove that you’ve been there, the supermarket even offers somewhat creepy-looking Slavic handicrafts.
I don’t know why you might want them, but they might make a statement piece on an empty shelf, or a good paperweight at least.
Jokes about the Russian Supermarket
Of course, given that it’s a Russian supermarket in Singapore that was shared on Reddit, there were a fair number of jokes being traded around.
For instance, the first comment asks if this is Babushka (Grandmother) approved.
Judging from the range of products and the 300 plus upvotes, it can be assumed that it is.
Next, there are a few wordplays thrown in like “Add to Putin Cart”, with the next comment being uh, questionable at best.
To make things better or worse, there were also people joking about whether there were any Ukrainian stores opening nearby soon, because it was going to get annexed.
Given the current tension at the borders, that deserves a dry laugh and no upvotes.
