Singapore has seen no shortage of amazing sportsmen.
I’m sure most of us know of swimmer Joseph Schooling, our first Olympic gold medalist back in 2016 who even beat records set by Michael Phelps.
A more classic pick could also be Li Jiawei, who has achieved multiple successes in table tennis.
However, long-time fans of football would know former international footballer Salim Moin.
Who, unfortunately, has passed away recently.
Former S’pore Footballer & Coach Passes Away
On 7 Nov, the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) released a Facebook post, informing that Salmin Moin passed away.
He was 59 years old.
Yahoo News reported that his close friends said Mr Salim complained of chest pains on just before midnight on Friday, 6 Nov.
He collapsed when he reached Sengkang General Hospital, close to his Hougang apartment.
The FAS stated that they were “shocked and saddened” by his passing and their thoughts and condolences go out to his family and loved ones.
His Legacy
Mr Salim is regarded as a highly respected figure in local football.
He had represented the Lions in the 1980s and 1990s in the Malaysia Cup and the World Cup qualifiers amongst other competitions.
He played alongside other players such as goalkeeper David Lee and defender Terry Pathmanathan.
Between 1979 and 1993, he scored a total of 63 times.
In 1996, after retiring, Mr Salim began his coaching career. He was notably a coach for the National Football Association from 2009 to 2010.
He also spent two seasons with Gombak United as their Prime League coach until 2010, where he joined Balestier Khalsa Football Club as an assistant coach.
Mr Salim then became their head coach for their 2011 S-League season.
In 2012, he replaced the head coach of Woodlands Wellington FC after their squad suffered to back-to-back last-place finishes.
It turned out for the best, as Mr Salim led the team to fifth place in 2013, the FAS mentioned.
Hougang United
Come 2015, Woodlands Wellington and Hougang United had a merger.
Mr Salim then became the head coach for the new Hougang United. This lasted till 2018 when he became an assistant to the new head coach, Clement Teo.
The team also uploaded a Facebook post when they learnt of his passing.
“An integral part of our 2019 side that propelled the Club to its best finish last season, cherished for his heart and personality on and off the pitch,” they said.
Passing Of Big Names Worldwide
Mr Salim is one of the few big names who have passed away recently.
Rock legend Eddie Van Halen passed away on 6 October, succumbing to throat cancer.
He had been battling it for the last five years and was hospitalised on October 2019.
His death was confirmed by his son, who claimed he was the ‘best father I could ever ask for.”
A few weeks later, Brunei’s Prince ‘Abdul’ Azim also passed away from an autoimmune disease.
He was remembered for being a supporter of many charitable causes, and celebrities around the world also mourned his passing.
