It’s that time of year again.
The time when we get all giddy and excited about a tech company’s new line of products, only to sigh in disappointment when we remember that we can’t afford any of them.
But maybe that’s not true this time?
At its Galaxy Unpacked event a couple of days ago, Samsung unveiled a new series of products, some of which didn’t make our bank accounts cower in fear.
Curious as to which ones they are? Well, keep reading.
Here are 10 facts about Samsung’s latest products, including one that was a shocking omission from the list:
Goodbye, Galaxy Note
That’s right, Samsung will not be releasing a new Galaxy Note this year.
Instead, the company said, it plans to “continue to expand the Note experience and bring many of its popular productivity and creativity features.”
Samsung maintained that it’s not killing off the Galaxy Note.
Still, at least for the time being, it seems that the Galaxy Notes’ flagship status has been accorded to their new Foldable phones.
There’s a New ‘Cheaper’ Foldable Phone – The Galaxy Z Flip 3
Technically, it’s the Galaxy Z Flip 2, since the first one only came out in February last year, but it’s not the number that has people talking.
Unlike the bigger Z Fold 3, the Z Flip 2 is more affordable, some people would say, if those people were Bill Gates.
While the Z Fold 3 will cost S$2,398 in Singapore, the Z Flip 3 will be selling for S$1,398.
Both will be available for sale here from 10 Sep.
The Galaxy Z Fold 3 Has a Stylus
The Galaxy Z Fold 3 now has support for Samsung’s proprietary stylus – the S pen – making it Samsung’s first foldable phone to work with the S Pen.
The new Z Fold will support both the S Pen and S Pen Pro, both of which, unsurprisingly, are sold separately.
While both pens have a specially engineered retractable tip to limit the force applied on the screen, the S Pen Pro also has a useful toggle switch which allows you to switch between the Fold 3 and other S Pen-compatible phones and tablets.
For the First Time, the Galaxy Fold Will Have an Under-Display Camera
The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is also Samsung’s first smartphone to feature a UDC, or Under-Display Camera.
For those who don’t know, UDC technology allows smartphone makers to hide their cameras behind a phone’s display, allowing for a more immersive, full-screen experience.
This isn’t exactly revolutionary, as it’s been used for years now. But Samsung users will be pleased to finally have access to this nifty feature.
The Galaxy Z Flip 3’s Screen Will Be Bigger Than Its Predecessor
Once you open up the Galaxy Z Flip 3, you’ll notice something immediately: it’s significantly bigger than its predecessor.
Its front screen size has been bumped up from 1.1-inches to 1.9-inches, and now comes with a 120Hz refresh rate.
Other that that, however, things are pretty much the same, as the main display is 6.7-inches with 2640 x 1080 pixels resolution.
The Galaxy Z Flip 3 Will Come in at Least 7 Different Colours
The Galaxy Z Fold 3, while sleeker and a little more fancy, will only be released in three different colours: Phantom Black, Phantom Green, and Phantom Silver.
Meanwhile, its cheaper brother will come in at least seven different colours, which will be sure to attract some buyers.
The colours are:
- Lavender
- Matte black
- White
- Green
- Cream
- Grey
- Pink
Two New Smartwatches Were Announced
At their Galaxy Unpacked Event, Samsung unveiled two new watches: the Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic.
Many have tipped these watches as the best competitor so far to the Apple watch, because of its classy design and its various health and wellness features, including sleep tracking.
The Galaxy Watch 4 has an aluminum casing, while the Classic has a stainless steel design, which gives it more of a premium feel.
Prices for the Galaxy Watch 4 starts at SGD$448 and SGD$598 for the Classic.
Samsung & Google Teamed Up to Create the Galaxy Watch 4
When two tech giants such as Samsung and Google team up, you know they’re going to do good things.
The new OS for Samsung’s smartwatches was created by combining Wear OS – Google’s Android OS for smartwatches – and Tizen – a custom operating system developed by Samsung.
With the new revamped OS, Android might finally be able compete with the Apple watch.
The Galaxy 4 Watch Can Calculate Body Fat From Your Wrist
While the Galaxy 4 watch can measure blood pressure and detect irregular heart rhythms, just like the Apple watch, it can also calculate body composition.
That’s right, Samsung’s new smartwatch has a feature that can calculate body fat percentage and muscle mass, a feature that we’ve only previously seen in Amazon’s fitness band – the Halo band.
The New Galaxy Earbuds Are the Most Affordable Yet
Samsung’s new Galaxy Buds 2 will cost around SGD$248, making it the company’s most affordable audio product.
Even with the relatively low price, fans will be pleased to know that it still offers noise cancellation.
Like many other earbuds, the Galaxy Buds 2 are charged in a small wireless case, and the buds themselves are the lightest and smallest Galaxy Buds earbuds released by Samsung.
They also come in four different colours: Graphite, White, Olive, and Lavender.
