Once again, our own Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) has saved the day.

Though instead of a blazing fire or a stranded cat, they’ve saved the life of an individual…

Whose current circumstances could have been really dire had it not been for SCDF’s timely intervention?

SCDF Rescues Crew Member from Ship After Suspected Stroke

Earlier today (13 September 2021), an anchored vessel off the eastern side of Singapore had issued a call for medical assistance.

Apparently, a crew member had suffered a possible stroke.

The SCDF swiftly sent two marine vessels to the scene, where seven SCDF marine specialists then boarded the affiliated vessel.

It was on the main deck that they found a conscious crew member, who was feeling numb and had lost sensation along the right side of his body.

The specialists then began to shift the man slowly, securing him onto a stretcher. At the same time, another separate team of marine specialists attached a height-lowering system to a crane on the vessel, which served to lower the man onto the SCDF’s Marine Rescue Vessel (MRV).

It should be noted that at that time, there were strong winds and the sea current was not forgiving.

Thankfully, with ample coordination and communication, the operation was a success.

Once the casualty was evacuated, he was swiftly taken to Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal, where he was transferred onto an awaiting SCDF emergency ambulance.

He was then taken to Changi General Hospital.

The incident was disclosed via SCDF’s Facebook page.

The initial call for medical assistance had been issued at around 1:30 am; the post was, however, created just hours ago.

Heroics

Lest you’re unaware, the SCDF has been pretty busy of late.

Around three weeks ago, a fire had erupted in an HDB flat in Bukit Merah, forcing firefighters to break into a burning unit.

“Upon arrival, SCDF firefighters donned breathing apparatus sets and conducted forced entry into the burning unit on the 14th floor,” the SCDF said.

The raging fire involved the contents in the room and was eventually extinguished with one water jet.

“As a precautionary measure, about 50 residents from the 14th to 16th floors were evacuated by Police and SCDF officers.”

And around two months ago, a taxi was flipped on its side in a road traffic accident.

Two passengers ended up getting trapped in the vehicle.

Upon arrival, the SCDF assessed the situation and decided that they need their specialist team, the elite Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (DART), to help.

In the meantime, the firefighters from the Central Fire Station stabilised the flipped taxi using stepped chocks and blocks.

The windscreen of the taxi was also cut out to open up access to the trapped passengers from the front.

After an hour, the trapped passengers were evacuated safely in a delicate operation.
