Recently, a seven-year-old boy was hit by a school bus while crossing the road, and dragged four or five metres after getting caught under the bottom of the vehicle.
He suffered severe abrasions on his head, face and body as a result of the accident.
Here’s what happened.
The Accident
The accident happened on 27 March at a covered driveway located at Block 386 Bukit Batok West Avenue 5.
According to 67-year-old retiree Zhang Chengzhu, who witnessed the accident, he had been relaxing at the void deck when the accident occurred, and saw the boy get caught under the school bus.
He quickly shouted at the driver, alerting him of the mishap. The driver stopped the bus immediately but by then, the boy had already been dragged four to five metres between the two rear wheels of the bus.
The driver and a few passers-by rushed to free the boy from under the bus. When they managed to extricate him, the boy was unconscious with his face covered in fresh blood.Â
Grandmother was Nearby Waiting For Him
The boy’s grandmother had bought takeaway at a coffee shop nearby, and sat on a bench by the roadside while waiting to pick her grandchildren up. Upon spotting the school bus, she walked over with her five-year-old granddaughter, only to see the driver carrying the injured boy.
Distraught, she ran to the driver in tears, carried the boy to the roadside, and tried to wipe the blood off his face. When the boy regained consciousness, he started crying uncontrollably.Â
An ambulance arrived at the scene quickly, and paramedics checked and bandaged the boy’s wounds before sending him to the hospital.
The Aftermath
Reportedly, the boy lived nearby with his grandparents, parents, and younger sister. On that day, he possibly intended to cross the road after alighting from the school bus, to find his grandmother and sister.Â
Due to his small stature, the other passengers on the bus did not notice when he got caught after rolling under the bus.Â
According to the boy’s father, his entire body was injured with abrasions, and his face might have been fractured. He had only found out about the incident when the school bus coordinator notified him.Â
Due to his emotional state, he was unwilling to elaborate further.Â
The 7-year-old boy was a student at a nearby primary school, and the school bus involved seated 28.Â
The police confirmed that a small bus and a 7-year-old pedestrian were involved in the incident, and the injured was conscious when conveyed to the hospital. The 57-year-old bus driver is now assisting in the investigation.
The boy is now being treated at National University Hospital (NUH).
