While many uncles and aunties struggle to use smartphones and tablets, there are some babies out there who can already search for and play their favourite YouTube videos on their iPads.

In fact, one study showed that 40% of kids learn how to use iPads before they can even speak.

But is this really something we should scoff at?

While such devices are often used as a means to pass the time by playing games or surfing social media, it also gives you access to a vast repository of information.

And if kids are using it anyway, why not teach them how to use it for their own educational benefit?

Secondary School’s FB Post of Students Receiving Their Learning Device Got Over 3.5K Shares in Less Than a Day

Well, that’s exactly what happened to one lucky batch of students in Riverside Secondary School.

Recently, Secondary Two students in the Woodlands educational institution received their personal learning devices as part of the nationwide Personalised Digital Learning Programme.

But these weren’t just any old learning devices; the students received iPads with a magic keyboard and Apple Pencil.

Riverside Secondary School announced the exciting move in a Facebook post on Wednesday (24 March).

“Our Secondary Two Riversidians were the first in our school to receive their personal learning devices as part of the nationwide Personalised Digital Learning Programme”, it said.

“There’s no better way to show our appreciation for this opportunity than to do our best and more to be a self-directed and collaborative digital learner of tomorrow.”

The school added that its Secondary 1 and 3 students will be receiving the same learning devices next week.

The post made the rounds on social media quicker than a TikTok challenge, as it garnered over 4,200 shares in less than a day.

This is part of a national digital literacy programme that was launched last year by the Ministry of Education.

Students will be allowed to pay for the devices using Edusave, as most students should have enough balance in their Edusave accounts for it.

On top of a yearly contribution to their Edusave accounts for Singapore citizens, the Ministry of Education provided a one-off Edusave top-up of S$200 last year.

Students from lower-income households will also receive more subsidies.

Device management software will be installed on each device so teachers can control how it is being used and even track how students use the device.
