In this day and age, you’ve got to be careful about what you put out there.
The NTUC chief had first-hand experience when it comes to this; and now, a milk company joined the list too.
Milk Company Slammed for Turning Women into Cows in an Adv Video
Seoul Milk is the largest dairy company in South Korea.
So I guess it’s safe to say that, when it comes to milk, they’re probably the experts you need and all.
Unfortunately, the same couldn’t be said about their advertising guidelines.
On 29 Nov 2021, the company released this video advertisement on YouTube:
It also showed a man secretly filming a group of women while they went about their daily activities.
The narration in the advertisement goes like this (translated from Korean):
“They drink clean water from pure nature, insist on an eco-friendly organic diet, and live peacefully in a pleasant environment. I will try to approach them cautiously.”
The moment he stepped onto a branch, alerting the women to his presence, they turned into cows immediately.
Criticisms
Unsurprisingly, the video was met with much criticism.
For one, it’s said that this video gives reason for men to secretly film them which is bad, as spycam crimes have become a serious social problem for South Korea.
And two, women turning into cows?
“The man is illegally taking photos of women, and the women turning into cows. This advertisement has too many problems. It’s disgusting.”
“Women turning into cows? Really?”
The video was taken down on 8 Dec 2021.
Apology
On Wednesday, the largest dairy producer by market share took to their platform to make an official apology:
Here’s what the statement said:
“We sincerely apologize to everyone who felt uncomfortable because of our YouTube advertisement. We are accepting this matter with a heavy heart and will internally review and take extra care to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.”
The company did not reveal the name of the agency which produced the video but highlighted that six out of eight people featured in the scene were actually men.
Not that it makes things better.
Not The First Time
Back in 2003, Seoul Milk had a nude performance where three ladies in their birthday suits were sprayed with milk using a spray gun, according to Allkpop.
Oh, did I mention the show took place in public?
It was reported that they were fined for obscenity in public.
As for what the most recent advertisement was trying to bring across, we will never know.
