During the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been two main reactions to COVID-19 regulations.
One group understands the importance of restrictions and safety measures, recognises that they’re necessary to stem the spread of COVID-19, and follows all the rules.
The other group is like I get what you’re saying, but nah.
Unfortunately for them, breaking COVID-19 rules isn’t just forcefully frowned upon, but can also land them in trouble.
15 People Allegedly Gathered at a Serangoon Garden Pub
15 people are being investigated by the police for an illegal gathering that took place in 2020.
The group, aged between 21 and 30, are believed to have met up at a pub along Serangoon Garden Way on 23 June last year.
The police said they received a report that day at around 2.25am about “people entering and exiting” the pub.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found 15 people allegedly gathering illegally.
The pub, as were many pubs at the time, was closed, and was being used for a “private gathering”, the police said.
The pub was not named by the police in their news release.
Man Jailed For Hosting 3 Big Parties
Think the authorities won’t put you in prison for breaking COVID-19 rules? Think again.
Just over a week ago, a 25-year-old man was jailed for two weeks for hosting three big parties in an industrial building over two weekends.
Joel Ang Yun Nan first held a birthday party for himself on 8 Jan this year, which involved 40 people.
This was during Phase 3 when group sizes for social gatherings were restricted to eight people.
Before that, Ang had already held several gatherings in a unit in the Midview City building in Sin Ming.
The unit was rented by Music Production Studio, of which Ang was an authorised representative.
Ang didn’t charge his guests an entry fee, but made his money from selling alcohol, and split the profits with another man.
Ang put the word out about his parties by sending messages to his friends, who would inform their own social circles.
Ang’s offences eventually came to light after Midview City’s security team noticed that there were people entering and leaving Ang’s unit one day and heard music playing as well.
But even while he was being investigated for his illegal gatherings, Ang held another party at the same unit on 17 Jan.
Last month, the 25-year-old was sentenced to two week’s jail and fined S$15,500. If he’s unable to pay the fine, he’ll have to serve two more months in jail.
