SFA Investigating Clementi Food Stall That Allegedly Put Raw Chickens on the Floor

If you’re Singaporean and therefore biologically obligated to like Chicken Rice, you’re probably familiar with this:

Reader: Chicken?

Hanging chicken.

Reader: Ah.

A hanging roasted chicken will make you salivate like nothing else, but where are the poor, raw chickens kept before they make their way to the chicken gallows?

Well, here are some places you could keep raw chicken that’s about to be cooked:

  • in a fridge
  • on a table
  • in a clean bucket
  • in your right hand while cooking with your left
  • in your left hand while cooking with your right

But one stall in Clementi has implemented a much more unique storage system: keeping raw chickens on the floor.

SFA Investigating Clementi Food Stall That Allegedly Put Raw Chickens on the Floor

A repulsed netizen has taken to social media to complain about a stall in Clementi with unhygienic practices.

The man, who appears to be a delivery rider, detailed the incident in a Facebook post on Friday (16 Apr).

The netizen said he was waiting for a food delivery order at a stall at Block 325 Clementi Avenue 5.

The stall sells “roasted delights”, which include duck, pork, and chicken.

But instead of the hanging poultry whetting the delivery rider’s appetite, he was disgusted by what he saw at the back of the stall: two whole raw chickens sitting on the floor.

Oh, and it gets worse.

The netizen claims that this is “not the first time” he has witnessed the stall’s unhygienic practice of keeping raw chickens on the “dirty wet floor”.

The man said he managed to snap a picture this time while waiting for his food to be prepared.

He warned his fellow diners who live in Clementi about eating at this stall.

It’s unclear, however, if the chicken was meant for consumption or whether the stall meant to throw it away.

SFA’s Response

Speaking to Stompthe Singapore Food Agency (SFA) said it is aware of the incident and is currently investigating it.

“Food safety is a joint responsibility. While SFA puts in place and enforces the regulatory measures, food operators must play their part by adhering to good food hygiene and preparation practices,” SFA said.

Members of the public who come across any potentially errant food operator should report to SFA via the online feedback form. As part of the enquiry and gathering of evidence, SFA may engage the feedback provider for more details.”

SFA added that it will not hesitate to take enforcement action against errant food operators if it has sufficient evidence.

So please, keep your poultry off the floor. The two of them were never meant to meet.
