Around a month ago, we were all celebrating when the last admin of the SG Nasi Lemak pleaded guilty in court.
At that time, however, the court had not yet delivered a final sentence for the case.
Now, it looks like the verdict’s out.
1 Year of Mandatory Treatment for SG Nasi Lemak Telegram Admin
On Thursday (3 June), 27-year-old Leonard Teo Min Xuan was sentenced to mandatory treatment for a year for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD).
A mandatory treatment order directs an offender suffering from certain treatable psychiatric conditions to undergo psychiatric treatment.
Teo is the last of four administrators of Telegram group chat SG Nasi Lemak to be sentenced. A month ago on 4 May, he pleaded guilty to the transmission of obscene material through electronic means and being in possession of 427 obscene images.
A third charge of possessing 99 obscene videos was also considered in his sentencing.
Created in November 2018, the group chat regularly discussed sexual matters, circulated obscene and sexually explicit materials, and encouraged vice activities. Much of the material circulated often involved women and underaged girls, and had been shared without their knowledge and consent.
If you searched the word ‘vile’ in the dictionary, this group chat would probably have popped up as an example.
At its peak, SG Nasi Lemak had more than 44,000 members, with 29 of its members’ given administrator rights.
In order to remain in the group, members had to stay active and contribute by uploading and sharing sexually explicit material. In order to keep his account active, Teo had done so in October 2019.
Is it just me, or is this starting to sound like some sort of creepy cult?
During the court hearing on 4 May, Teo’s lawyer, Defence lawyer Ashwin Ganapathy asked for a mandatory treatment order suitability report.
As it turns out, Teo was assessed to be suitable for it. According to Mr Ganapathy, the Institute of Mental Health report clearly stated that his major depressive disorder contributed to the offences, and that Teo’s judgement was impaired.
For each charge of transmitting and possessing obscene objects, Teo could have been sentenced to three months’ jail, fined, or both.
The Rest of the Admins
Amongst everyone else involved in the group chat, four admins had been arrested by the police after a large number of reports against SG Nasi Lemak were made between 15 March and 3 October 2019.
In reality, out of the four, only one had been sentenced to jail.
39-years-old Liong Tianwei was sentenced to nine weeks’ jail and fined S$26,000 on 9 March this year.
The other two, 20-years-old Justin Lee Han Shi and 18-years-old Abdillah Sabaruddin, were both given a year’s probation for their offences. They had both been charged and sentenced back in 2020.
This meant that they had to perform 40 hours of community service and remain indoors from 11pm to 6am.
