There are some things in life you just didn’t expect to happen, like:
- a bank getting robbed with a toy gun
- Justin Bieber having his first concert in Singapore since 2013
- getting run over by a trolley on a Sheng Siong travelator
Yes, all three of these sound absurd, with some more than the others… but they are very real.
Here’s what happened at Sheng Siong when a trolley decided to take the travelator.
Ran Over Woman Initially
In the viral TikTok video, the trolley can be seen to be holding flattened cardboard boxes.
The unattended trolley got onto the travelator after a woman did, and then picked up speed.
The woman was barely a third of her way down the travelator when the trolley hit the right side of her body from behind, causing her to fall down.
She could only sprawl face down on the ground in shock as the trolley hurtled down the travelator at another unsuspecting man at the bottom.
Staff Couldn’t Catch Trolley, Ran Over Second Person At End of Travelator
The video also showed two Sheng Siong supermarket staff chasing after the trolley.
One staff was shown running past the fallen woman, trying to reach the trolley before it ran another person down. However, their efforts were in vain as the trolley ran a second person down at the end of the travelator.
Another staff member seemed to have tried to stop the travelator by pressing the emergency stop button.
After running over the second person, the trolley then proceeded to crash haphazardly across the floor. The video then cuts off, so it’s possible that the trolley injured more people than shown.

Reactions from Netizens: Why Didn’t Staff Help Woman Up?
The recording of the in-store surveillance footage was uploaded to TikTok on 19 April. The incident took place in late February 2022, according to the timestamp on the footage.
Commenters recognised the Sheng Siong outlet as the one at Block 105 Canberra Street.
While some were questioning why the staff didn’t assist the fallen woman and decided to run after the trolley instead, others explained that it actually made sense to try to stop the trolley.
As the trolley picked up even more speed after rolling down the entire travelator, the person at the bottom of the travelator would bear the full impact of the trolley’s momentum.
The staff was likely trying to prevent the trolley from hitting the person at the bottom, for they’ll get even more injured than the first lady did. Unfortunately, the trolley was simply too fast for the staff to stop.
Sheng Siong has not made any comments about this incident yet.
