An image of a shoe has been making rounds on the internet and sparking debates over what colour it is.
While some may think it is new, this photo actually entered the World Wide Web in 2017 and is having a second shot at fame in 2019.
I was first shown this picture by my boyfriend a few days ago. Thankfully, we both see it as grey and teal. This means that we are compatible and we should be together forever.
The shoes look like your typical classic Vans Old Skool sneakers.
Except…It’s Neither Typical Nor Classic
In fact, it has caused minds all over the world to go head to head with each other. Some see it as white and pink, others, like myself, see it as grey and teal.
I have tried many times to shut my eyes and will myself to see pink. However, all I see is grey and teal.
When we talk about this shoe, how can we forget the image of the dress that split the world into two camps?
Blue and black or white and gold?
Attempts to explain the shoe
(i) Left brain/ right brain dominant
Some have reported that the reason why there are two camps is that each of us has a different side of the brain that is more dominant.
If you see white and pink, it means that the right half of your brain is dominant. If you see teal and grey, it means that the left half of your brain is dominant.
However, this claim has been rebutted by researchers who report that such an explanation is actually false!
So the next time someone tries to give you this explanation, tell them that that is an old skool way of thinking (see what I did there). And you can enlighten them.
(ii) Colour
Elle’s photo editor explained that the reason why the white colour is not white as it should be is due to the fact that the colour temperature is unbalanced and the lighting of the shoe is bad.
She has very kindly recalibrated the colour tones in the original photo to help those who see teal and grey. If you originally saw pink and white, then I guess, all you will ever see is pink and white.
People Seemed To Like The Second Theory More
This explanation seems to be the most sound and is backed up by other sources too!
An eye specialist shares that those who view the shoe as pink see a blue light in the background.
Conversely, those who see the grey shoe are informed by their brains that the light is white. The specialist also adds that what makes this photo so fascinating is that we cannot comprehend why the person beside us does not see the same thing.
I am looking forward to the next photo that will once again split the world into two. Or maybe three?
