SIA Mentioned ‘Some Jobs…Will No Longer Be Required’

Well, that’s a nice way to put it.

I’m pretty sure the management of a prestigious company wouldn’t come up to you and say things like: “Eh, you are useless to me now. Pack up and go.”

So, lemme try and decipher their fancy language for you while I’m at it. (Coz I’m this bored at work)

Back in August 2017, SIA said that they will be offering their cabin crew unpaid leave in an attempt to cut operating costs. This is a measure to help them keep up in an increasingly tough market.

Singapore Airlines has been battling strong competition from middle eastern airlines and Asian low-cost carriers.

“Having temporary surpluses or deficits of cabin crew is not unusual due to the nature of our business, and this voluntary scheme over a specific period of time is to ensure that we efficiently manage crew resources and operational requirements,” a spokesperson said.

SIA is currently in the midst of a review and does not rule out the possibility of job cuts, as mentioned back in June. The offer for voluntary unpaid leave came just two months after.

“As we change the way we work the new processes, as new technologies are introduced, some jobs our staff is performing will no longer be required,” said CEO Goh Choon Phong on Thursday, 14 Dec.

“Our people fully understand the need for transformation.”

SIA reported a surprise loss in the quarter through March, which was the first in five years. This prompted CEO Goh Choon Phong to tackle the cost issues and to “to better position the group for long-term sustainable growth across its portfolio of full-service and budget airline operations.”

(In simple England: We want to make sure we can still earn money in the long run. Thank you for your “voluntary” sacrifice)

All right, jokes aside, I really do hope that SIA will continue to perform well as one of the best airlines in the world.

After all, the first impression(for travellers) is important, right?
