Singapore Airlines Diverts Its Flight Away From Iranian Airspace Without Stating a Reason

Lest you’re unaware, Iran and the United States aren’t exactly on friendly terms as of late.

Iran said it has launched a missile attack on US-led forces in Iraq early on Wednesday because they weren’t happy about the US drone strike on Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani.

According to Channel News Asia, the Iranian commander’s killing had raised fears of a wider war in the Middle East.

This entire saga has seemingly prompted Singapore Airlines to take action in order to safeguard the safety of their passengers.

Singapore Airlines Diverts It’s Flight Away From Iranian Airspace

Singapore Airlines has announced that it will be diverting all flight routes from Iranian airspace.

“All SIA flight routes are being diverted from the Iranian airspace,” the airline said in an email. However, they did not specifically pinpoint the reason for their decision.

It’s safe to say that the reason is pretty obvious though.

When it comes down to it, Singapore Airlines is probably taking on the ‘better to be safe than sorry’ approach.

So you must be wondering what exactly is the situation right now?

The Situation In Iran

Iran said that the missiles were in retaliation to the US strike last week that killed Iran’s Soleimani and Iraqi top commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis.

Nine rockets hit Ain al-Asad airbase in the country’s west, which is the largest of the Iraqi military compounds where foreign troops reside at.

Iran has since owned up to the attack.

Tehran had aimed ballistic missiles from Iranian territory against at least two Iraqi military bases which were hosting US-led coalition personnel.

The Pentagon said in a statement, “It is clear that these missiles were launched from Iran and targeted at least two Iraqi military bases hosting US military and coalition personnel at Ain al-Asad and Irbil.”
