If you have been on Reddit Singapore, you would have seen some interesting topics that redditors would discuss occasionally.
Of course, given the current COVID-19 situation, there wouldn’t be any lack of threads regarding the virus.
With that being said, one of the recent threads that had caught my attention was a thread on whether has anyone got retrenched because of COVID-19 so far.
Everyone should be fine, right? The Government is helping a lot, right?
Without further ado, let me bring you through some of the comments.
Reddit Thread Reveals How Employees Have Been Taking Pay Cut, Unpaid Leave or Retrenched Due to COVID-19
There were numerous industries mentioned in the thread, and one of the first industries that will be hit the hardest would probably be the travel industry.
Given the situation of COVID-19, traveling would be the last thing on your mind. One of the redditors mentioned that he worked for a travel company and four of his immediate colleagues were retrenched.
According to him, there were a total of 27 full-timers in Singapore, so that is almost a 15% reduction in workforce.
In addition, all other staff have been requested to take voluntary unpaid leave as much as possible and use their paid leave first.
Another comment also mentioned that one of his friends working in the airline industry is also on no-pay leave for a while now, due to the Hong Kong protest and COVID-19.
The service sector is also doing badly due to the lack of customers. One of the comments stated that staff from F&B and smaller SMCs were put on no-pay leave due to poor businesses.
Another comment agreed that F&B isn’t doing very well, for their family business was hit hard the last two months. After covering all the expenses, their family could not get any earnings out of it.
Another comment mentioned how his dad has to take unpaid leave in the F&B industry too.

On the other hand, it seems like some companies have turned “restructuring” into a hunger game.
They’d have to apply for other positions in the company, and if you can’t find one, GG: you’d most probably lose your job.
Overall, it seems like all the industries are affected in times like this. Workers are either on unpaid leave, suffering from a pay cut, or unfortunately retrenched.

Given how COVID-19 is not going away anytime soon, this could only get worse.
So if you still have a job and are still getting paid, you should really count your blessings, no?
